Vessels of Imagination: Exploring Greek Vases.

Sundays, February 12, 19 & 26
1–4 p.m.
Every Sunday, it´s ArtTime/FamilyTime at the MFAH. On February 12, 19, and 26, visit the Family Zone in Gallery 200, Beck Building, Second Level. Spend some time with the friendly family educators—sit on a pillow and read, sketch a work of art, and get involved in an investigation of a work of art. In the studio, create an art project inspired by original works of art on display in the Family Zone.

•Sunday Storytime: Make connections between the storybook, Young Zeus by G. Brian Karas, and an ancient Greek vase that shows many of the same Greek gods—Zeus, Hera, and more! (begins at 1:30 p.m.)

•Creation Station: At this family-friendly workshop, artists encourage families to create art using materials or ideas similar to those used by the artist who created the featured work of art on display in the Family Zone. At this program, participants will use stencils to create a Greek vase shape and then design and decorate their vessel with stories, just like the ancient Greeks.

•Gallery Investigations: An MFAH educator at the Gallery Cart has looking games, books, and hands-on activities for families to use when exploring the shapes, stories, and designs of ancient Greek vases. (2-4 p.m.)

•Sketching in the Galleries: An MFAH teaching artist guides adults and children of all drawing levels at this informal program. There will be a special drawing sheet that families can use to sketch the many designs on the different parts of a vase—often called the mouth, neck, shoulders, belly, and feet, just like the human body.

Doodle 4 Google 2012 Competition

"If I could travel in time, I´d visit..."

I'm so excited about this super cool program that I'm republishing the details from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) and hope the Houston kids in your life will take a shot at making a difference in their education. The cool factor just wins out on this one.

The MFAH is proud to support the 2012 Doodle 4 Google competition. The competition is open to K—12 students of U.S. schools and homeschools to create their own Google doodle.

This year´s theme is "If I could travel in time, I´d visit..." Students take a blank canvas to harness their curiosity and imagine the past, present, and/or future anywhere in the world.

Entry forms may be picked up and dropped off at the Kinder Foundation Education Center in the Law Building through noon on March 16. Entry forms can also be downloaded here, and mailed directly to Google. Must be postmarked March 20 to be considered. For more information on how to enter, click here.

Ten Texas Finalists:

Ten finalists from Texas will be able to see their work on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, after the close of the competition.

Consider treatingyour youngsters to a Valentine treat the weekend before Valentine's Day. Make pink pancakesor toast cut with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Add red jam for an extra touch.Mid-day, head to Young at Art on 19th Street in the Heightsto paint pottery with your family. (Plan way ahead by venturing to one of theMad Potter locations on February 1 from 3:30 - 5 pm for Valentine's Day Art Camp and paint a custom gift for yourloved one.) Don't forget to call Grandma and Grandpa on Valentine's Day.

3.Houston welcomes the annual rodeo by kicking off Go Texan Day onFriday, Feb. 24. We love to watch the trail riders journey south on ShepherdDrive (north of Loop 610) each year usually between noon and 1 pm. Best of all,the trail riders stop at the Sears store on Shepherd near 41st Street so thatkids can learn about their horses, chuck wagons, attire and more. It's a greatphoto opp so remember
your camera.

4. If youcan't welcome the trail riders in, head to the Rodeo Parade on Sat., Feb. 25 startingat 10 am. The parade starts at Smith and Texas Ave. downtown and I suggestgrabbing a seat near the front so you can see the parade riders whenthey're fresh and ready to go.

5. Ideal forkids in early elementary school and younger, " Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music"will entertain audiences at Reliant Park, Feb. 4-7. The story unveils that a new musicteacher arrives on Sesame Street and cannot find her musical instruments. TheSesame Street neighbors begin the search, only to discover some very oddinstruments. Museum of Fine Arts Houston Celebrates Spring Break Fun with Week of Activities

Beginning Monday, March 12, the all-new Kinder Foundation Education Center (KFEC) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, becomes a hub of Spring Break activities, tours and creativity for visitors of all ages. Museum docents and staff will showcase the very best of Sketching in the Galleries, Storytime Tours, Family Tours, Creation Stations, Gallery Talks and more. New Amusement Park to Open in Galveston May 28, 2012

The Galveston Daily News and

KHOU Channel 11 are reporting that Tilman Fertitta and Landry's have already broken ground on a new amusement park for families in Galveston and beyond. "Pleasure Pier" as it will be called will take the place of the old Flagship Hotel, which long-time Galvestonians, Houstonians and many more likely remember. The new project is set to open Memorial Day weekend, which is May 28, 2012.

It brings back the lessons that many of us read about in history class years ago. Galveston once was an entertainment epicenter but all that changed with Hurricane Carla in 1961.

Ushering in a new era for the coastal island, the new park will include a 100-foot tall ferris wheel, a 36-foot double-decker carousel, a 200-foot tall swing (considered the highest ride in Texas), a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant, a shopping center and much more. With Astroworld long gone, this looks like a fun place to spend the day or weekend. Come on summer!

5 Self-Esteem Boosters for Kids

I'd like to re-post these parenting tips from the Real Age newsletter. While these tips aren't groundbreaking, it's good for parents to have a gentle reminder that all kids struggle at some point and there are simple things we can do as parents to help them. Consistency is the key.

5 Self-Esteem Boosters for Kids

An occasional bout of self-doubt is to be expected, and even has an upside -- it keeps a child from thinking she's invincible. But too much doubt leads to low self-esteem.
To help your child strike the right balance, give her plenty of opportunities to shine. And instead of empty praise, which she'll be onto in a flash, help her master different challenges. Here are five good and useful challenges to offer up.

5 Opportunities to Shine

If patches of self-doubt are lingering in your child, here are a few ways to help her feel unafraid of what life has to offer.

1. Encourage your child to get physical. Exercise has a short-term positive effect on self-esteem. Find an activity that interests your child, and then make it happen by being ready with transportation, encouragement, and equipment.

2. Get help at school. Check in with your child's teachers if academics seem to be part of the problem. Some schools have homework helpers; others offer tutoring recommendations to help children get back on track with their studies.

3. Nurture healthy habits. A healthy child is a stronger and more confident child. Nip bad habits in the bud. Enforce regular showers, shampoos, and bedtimes. And check that your child isn't slipping into poor eating habits. At home, insist on eating fresh, healthy meals together.

4. Reward accomplishments. Emphasize the positive. If your child is discouraged in one area, make a big deal of her accomplishments in another.

5. Do something just for fun. Surprise your child with an experience you know she'll enjoy, like a trip to an amusement park or an evening at the movies. If unpleasant experiences with friends are getting her down, give her something unexpected to tell the world about, making her feel special.

Developing a healthy sense of self begins when your child is a baby, and continues beyond her teenage years. So be consistent, nurturing, and responsive . . . even when she says she doesn't need you anymore.

Houston Kids Clown Around

If you're looking for inexpensive fun for very young kids, here are a few fun activities with local clowns that are sure to cheer up your kids.

On Tuesdays from noon until 2 pm, enjoy a FREEstorytime at the IKEA STORE on I-10. Children will also like the balloon animals that the clown will make for the kids to take home. Kids eat free all day and there's nopurchase required.

For those of you living near West, check at the Krogerat 5150 Buffalo Speedway near Westpark every Saturday from 10 am - 4 pm or Sunday noon - 6 pm. The clown entertains kids with stickers, prizes, magicpainting and balloon fun.

Recap of the Holidays & Looking Forward

So yes, our holiday schedule was crazy busy -- just like all of yours with children. Then, my Grandmother passed away late the night after Christmas Day. She was 98 years old so I have to admit that she had lived a full life and we knew it was coming but it doesn't make it any easier. My 6-year-old daughter didn't find it easy either.

The last Monday before the holiday break, I picked up Little K from her Girl Scout meeting that followed a day of school. She asked if the time had come & I carefully told her "not yet but any time." Grandmother's home is just 6 houses down the street from ours so we drive by literally every day & Little K's Great Grandmother has been an important part of her life. Little K said she cried to a teacher that day. Oh no!, I thought. So, while driving home, I told Little K that when we got home, we could talk more about it.

When we arrived home, we both cautiously proceeded to the family room as if instructed to do so. I sat down on the sofa & Little K curled up in my lap. "Do you want to talk about Grandmother?" I asked her.

She nodded. "Mommy, it's just not fair," she started. "You see, Grandmother is very old and I am very young so I just didn't get enough time with her." At that, she burst into tears and clung to my neck. I was floored that this little one had so much emotion bottled up inside. I just sat there, fighting my own tears and rubbed her back. A solid 10 minutes later, she stopped, dried her eyes and told me that she just had to get it out. I reassured her that she could talk to me any time about anything. She drifted off to her own room.

Exactly one week later, Grandmother passed away and we buried her on 12/29/2011. I worried how Little K would respond during the funeral but she wanted to go &, unfortunately, it wasn't her first funeral. She had several cousins there to keep her preoccupied and she didn't really seem bothered by too much of it. My mother & I both gave eulogies and while that was really tough, I felt it was important to share with people what a remarkable woman she was. Fiesty & loving all at the same time. After a day full of funeral activities -- all escorted by my family & noteably my supportive mother-in-law (yes, she's a gem!), we returned to our home in central home. My husband & I changed out of our all black attire into something more comfortable when suddenly we looked at each other bewildered.

What was that? Little K was downstairs by herself crying. Trent ushered her upstairs, where she crawled in our big bed & I just held her.. & cried too. It's so hard to tell what goes on in those little heads but surrounding them hugs & kisses, plus letting them know that they can talk to you is all I know to do. I think it's the right thing to do. Finally, she dried her eyes again & found a toy play with.

While Grandmother had actually lived in a nearby assisted living facility for about three years, she still owned her home and said when she got stronger, she'd move back. It happened to be the house where my dad was born, where he & his older sister played for years, & where my sister, my two cousins & I also played for years. My parents moved a couple of times while I was growing up so I have absolutely no attachment to any home that I grew up in. But, I'm attached to that one house down the street from me. Time heals all wounds & I do believe that. But a special place in my heart holds onto the memories that I have of my Grandmother. The extra special memories often include my daughter & her Great Grandmother interacting. We'll all move on but I'll hold onto those precious memories.

And in the New Year, I'll again be committed to spending time with my family. I've been reminded how important those little moments are & how I want to make the most of them.

Insperity Golf Experience & Flea Market at Discovery Green

Last weekend, Little K and I had a lot of time together since my husband was out of town. We headed down to the Insperity Golf Experience in downtown Houston. It's a 9-hole putt-putt golf course that was created by local artists. It's open through the end of November. With the weather this nice, there's no excuse not to check this out. It costs $5/adult and $3/child. Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them. I love the combination of art and sport.

I loved all the vibrant colors with our skyscrapers as the back drop. Amazing. Little K liked the zig-zagging colorful course. We both agreed that the pin ball machine turned golf hole was the most challenging. I never could get my golf ball to go up into the hole in the pin ball machine. Then again, I wasn't much good at those machines as a kid either. :-)

After completing the 9-hold course, we cooled off with an iced tea and a snowcone. You can guess who got which item.

We walked around Discovery Green and absolutely LOVED the Discovery Green Flea Market. Each booth sold different vintage items made of recycled materials. Little K's favorite was the booth with the enormous hulahoops (see photo at right). She could whip that thing around like nobody. She had me laughing so hard that when you watch the video on FaceBook, you see a very shaking camera person who won't stop giggling. It was great.

Any ways, the Flea Markets will return the 3rd Saturday of each month from noon - 6 pm. I already added the November 19 event to my calendar. It's located at 1500 McKinney so basically the area is right in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center. Expect to pay $5- $10 for parking in downtown.

I think most of all we both enjoyed being outdoors in the gorgeous weather. You just can't be in a bad mood when you're outside, soaking up a llttle sun and breathing the fresh air. Then again, maybe my good mood was due to my good company.

If you're wondering what to do in Houston the weekend of Oct. 22-23, look no further. As I mentioned in my October newsletter, the Zest in the West promises fun for young and old. More than 20 restaurants and food trucks will be on hand for plenty of tastings so come hungry. Plus, 19 wineries will be on hand for tastings for attendees 21 years old and over.

Revisiting Old Stomping Grounds & the Yexas State Fair

With the State Fair of Texas opening in Dallas this weekend, our Houston family decided to make the drive. It's what I call a rite of passage as a Texan. Little K packed plenty of DVDs, Barbies & other dolls for the incredibly long (4-hour) drive.

Upon our arrival in Big D, we were all filled with energy. I was thrilled that our 6-year-old loved the rides & games. I was surprised with the number of activities for the very young, too. Little K was proud that she popped two balloons with a hackie-sack & won a Smurfette doll. I giggled with the sight of Big Tex, although he wasn't as tall as I remembered him.

A trip to the State Fair wouldn't be complete without a Fletcher's corn dog, followed by a funnel cake. It was calories galore! I even rode in the very tall ferris wheel but I insisted that everyone hold very still. The

view really was beautiful!

After hours at the state fair, we checked into a downtown hotel. We drove by my old Arthur Andersen office on Main Street, which brought back great memories.

Since both my husband & I attended SMU in Dallas, we had to make a few pit stops. First, dinner at Snuffer's on lower

Greenville (because we hadn't eaten enough at the fair!). The cheddar fries were impeccable as we remembered.

We drove around the SMU campus, amazed at the growth that President Turner has brought to the university. We stopped by the Delta Gamma sorority house, where Andrea politely showed us around. The decor looked great! We not only found my old composite photos but also my mother-in-law's composite! Little K grinned from ear to ear.

Next, we drove through Snyder Plaza to see which places remained from our college days. Shell's, check. Burger House, check. Kuby's (a German restaurant & grocery) was even celebrating Oktoberfest with a

live band, food & beer. We enjoyed a cold one & a few dances. Kuby's was my father-in-law's favorite so this stop made us all smile.

To end the night, we made one last stop at a wall near Hillcrest & the Umphrey Lee building.

Trent showed our daughter a brick that his parents bought him at graduation & that was incorporated into a marquee entrance wall. Inscribed on the brick was "Trent Salch -- a 2 keg brick". My husband beamed.

On Sunday, we drove to Plano to see our first house & the trees that finally grew. We stopped by our old church, St. Elizabeth Anne Seton on Spring Creek & remembered how the events of 911 unfolded. It certainly prompted our move to Houston.

On our return home, we swung by Ozona's Restaurant on Upper Greenville to pick up our to-go order.

As we struggle to get a good radio signal in the car so we can hear the Houston Texans game, I'm so thankful that we moved back to Houston. Our family is much closer & our community much tighter. Even Little K pointed out that she was glad we lived in Houston because Dallas didn't have her friend Clare. Still, it's great to go back to Dallas & Plano, relive memory lane & see how we've all grown.

We look forward to SMU's homecoming on Nov. 1 when we hope to return. We'll need to make a new list of places to visit. Here's hoping SMU wins its football game that weekend like it did this weekend.

More Fun Things to Do in October in Houston with Kids

Each month, I publish an email newsletter with fun ideas of things to do in Houston with kids. If you haven't yet subscribed, take just 1 minute to sign up online and tell your friends, too.

There are so many fun things to do in Houston in October with kids that I couldn't fit them all in my October newsletter. Here are a few more that I hope you'll try.

1. Saturday, Oct. 8 – Sunday, Oct. 9 (10 am – 6 pm) is the Bayou City Art Festival, where you can walk through downtown to view all sorts of art from nationwide artists. Welcoming children, the Gexa Energy Creative Zone includes more than 12 activities designed specifically for young, aspiring artists. From creating custom jewelry to making mini art cars, your kids will have a blast. Parents and grandparents will enjoy strolling through booths featuring art work for sale by more than 300 artists. This is a fun way to spend the day outdoors and appreciate art. The festival is showcased in front of City Hall and around Hermann Square on the streets of Walker, Bagby and McKinney, as well as Sam Houston Park. Admission is $12/adult and children are free.

2. We had a blast at the Scarecrow Festival in Chappel Hill, Texas last year. It’s about 1.5 hours from Houston. If you have the day free, head out of town to enjoy this outdoor event together. Aim to arrive early as the traffic on Hwy. 290 heading into Chappel Hill backs up for miles. It’s worth the wait though. I enjoyed all the festival food (yum!) and the autumn décor and early holiday shopping. The children’s area includes a small ferris wheel ($5), a train ($3), a petting zoo ($3) with the cutest pot belly pig baby & much more. Be sure to bring cash as each booth has different fees and I didn’t see a place that accepted credit cards. Check out our photos from last year. This year, the festival is Saturday, Oct. 8 (10 am – 6 pm) and Sunday, Oct. 8 (noon – 5 pm). There is no admission fee but parking is $5/car.

3. Monday Oct. 10 is Columbus Day. Do your kids know who Christopher Columbus is? If your children span various ages, encourage your older children to read a story or make up a play about Christopher Columbus so the younger kids can learn. Teach them the “1492 Poem.”Or check out these fun ways to celebrate Columbus Day that I found online.

4. Attend Energy Day 2011 on Saturday, October 15 from 11 am to 5 pm at Houston’s Hermann Square (downtown at Smith between Walker & McKinney. Sponsored by the City of Houston and Consumer Energy Alliance, Energy Day is a FREE family-friendly festival that will celebrate and highlight the importance of energy in our daily lives and Houston’s role as the Energy Capital. The event is designed to educate youth of all ages about the overall role all forms of energy play in meeting our current and future needs. With more than 80 kid-friendly innovative exhibits, demonstrations and booths focused on some of the coolest energy-related scientific breakthroughs, games and interactive displays, Energy Day is sure to be a can’t-miss event for the entire family. 5. On Friday, Oct. 28 at 11 am, Miller Outdoor Theatre presents “The Adventures of Tom & Huck”, an adaptation of the book by Mark Twain. Bring a picnic blanket and lunch so you can enjoy this one-hour musical with your youngster. You’re sure to laugh, too. Miller Outdoor Theatre is located in Hermann Park at 6000 Hermann Park Drive. Arrive early to find parking before the production begins. Price: no charge

Involving Children in a Groundbreaking Ceremony

Last weekend, our church and school held a groundbreaking to expand the nursery school and the elementary school buildings. The event was very nice and most of what you'd expect from a groundbreaking ceremony.

However, I loved how the staff included the kids in this exciting event. Each student was encouraged to where their school uniform (in exchange for an out-of-uniform pass later during the week) and were given yellow plastic hard hats. A representative from every class -- from 6 weeks old to 14 years old -- was invited to add an item to the time capsule that will bury during the building phase. Lots of photos were taken and then everyone was invited inside for lunch and a "dirt cake with worms", which was actually chocolate cake with Oreos and gummy worms. They even had a focal point of a wheel barrel holding the dirt cake.

We all enjoyed the efforts made by the team at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and School. Just thought I'd share in case any of you are planning your own groundbreaking.

The Power of an Outside Voice for Parents

I subscribe to a weekly email newsletter published by motivational speaker Jon Gordon. Today's newsletter is especially relevant to parents so I'm republishing it here, thanks to www.JonGordon.com. I hope you enjoy it.

The Power of an Outside Voice

"Jon, never underestimate the power of an outside voice."

A CEO shared these words with me after I had just spoken to his company.

"We brought you here to reinforce our message," he said. "Our folks get tired of hearing us say it but when it comes from an outside voice it's new, fresh and exciting."

I knew exactly what he was talking about.

Even though I'm brought in to speak to some of the biggest names in sports and business my kids have little interest in hearing what I have to say. From what many parents tell me on my travels I know I'm not alone.

So, besides having my kids read my books and writing inspirational messages on whiteboards in their rooms, I've resorted to outside voices to reinforce the message and principles I want to share with them.

I have found coaches, tutors, youth pastors, mentors, experts, etc to encourage, coach, teach, push and bring out the best in my children. I bought my son a great video by Jim Loer on how to develop mental toughness during a tennis match and his tennis coach reinforces the importance of focus and practice. My friends Paul and Mindy McCord have given great advice to my daughter about being the best lacrosse player she can be.

I also give my children books to read, share inspiring Youtube videos, and we watch Joel Osteen as a family. Some of Joel's messages are similar to mine but when he says it, it's like they are hearing it for the first time. : )

There's something about the power of an outside voice and I want to encourage you to use outside voices to share and reinforce important principles and messages with your team at work and at home.

I will do all I can do to support you by continuing to write books, give talks and provide even more free resources to be an outside voice for you and others. I know its my purpose and I'm glad to be of help since no one will listen to me at my home. : )

But please know there are many outside voices out there and I encourage you to find the right people and resources to share with your work team and ask family members, neighbors, friends, teachers and mentors to encourage and teach your children and team at home.

There's the power of an outside voice and you can start tapping into one today!

... all politics aside, I have to agree with Hillary Clinton's "it takes a village to raise a child" concept. I feel like we have a wealth of great parents in our community who will watch out for my child, correct my child when needed and encourage her when possible. Looking for these "outside voices" is so important in our kids' development and I'm thankful for those special parents who continue to help us.

Lessons in Childhood Friendships

Do you remember your first friends? How about your best friends from early elementary school? I do.
First grade brings new friends for many kids, myself included. It's amazing the lessons you learn about friendship as early as first grade. Luckily, I still keep in touch with a few of my best friends from first grade (Carrie & Cathy), although we don't chat nearly enough. Two of us still live in Houston so that makes it easier, I suppose. Many like my mom never lived long enough in one city to maintain those friendships.

C & K Prepare for Class

The situation is a bit different for the two girls pictured at left. They actually met when they were about 3 months old at nursery school. This week, they donned matching uniforms down to the white socks and white and navy saddle shoes. The grins almost match, too. First grade never felt so good.

It's interesting to watch your kids grow up, make friends, have their squabbles and then make up. It'll be a great ride watching K & C grow up. With one school that starts in nursery school and continues through middle school, it should be easier for these two to remain friends. While I encourage my daughter to make more friends and to be a good friend to everyone, I can't help but to appreciate the strong relationships she's already developed. Here's to looking back on photos like these in 20 years and talking about everything they've accomplished together.

Visits with Great Grandparents are Such a Treasure

Last Thursday, Little K returned from her trip with her Grand to see her great grandparents in Ohio. It was the day before her "Meet the Teacher Day" and we jam-packed her schedule as summer came to a close.

Little K was tired but filled with stories to tell -- much like the ones I remember from similar trips when I was her age. Her suitcase also came with some interesting items like the live cicada named Emma. (I don't know how that got through security. Nor do I think Houston needs a cicada from Ohio.) Pa Pa Don is still his humorous self. Little K made the adults laugh until their sides hurt when she claimed that the cicada slobbered on her. Cicada slobber?

The trip had barely started when Grammy served homemade biscuits and gravy. Later Pa Pa Don fixed his now famous fluffy pancakes.

Little K and her extended family found time to go fishing and actually catch something besides grief. Little K discovered a new love for worms. She played with cousin Bentley, who is older and wiser by a few years. They went for a ride in Uncle Brad's tractor and ran in the green fields (a new idea since Houston has only brown grass due to the drought.) Aunt Kenny filled her up with another tasty meal.

They picked fresh vegetables from the garden like tomatoes, potatoes and beans. They relaxed in the hot tub so Pa Pa Don could "soak his bod". From the pictures that I've included you can see that there was even time for dress up.

The only missing piece was Mommy.

I'm so bummed I couldn't make this trip. Still, I am blessed that my mom (a.k.a. Grand) was willing to take Little K to visit her great grandparents. How many adults can recall such times with their great grandparents? Some of us didn't even get much time with our grandparents. The time allowed is never enough but we continue to make the most of what we are given.

It really makes me crave more time with our family members. I encourage you to treasure your time with yours, too.

At the end of the trip, Grand took Little K's picture with her great grandparents. Snap. Then Little K looked up at her Pa Pa Don and said, "Don't worry. I'll be back."

"That's what I'm afraid of," he said laughing. Yes, we will be back. Thanks for a great time and many more memories. We can't wait to see Grammy and Pa Pa Don in Houston this November. That gives me plenty of time to come up with some pranks to play on Pa Pa Don.

When Your Kid Takes a Trip Without You

We dropped Little K off at my parents, kissed & hugged her, & drove away. Her lip was pouting as we drove away & so was mine. I threw her my hand signal for "I love you".

Tomorrow, Little K heads to Ohio with my mom (aka Grand) to see K's great grandparents, great aunts, great uncles & cousins. I don't feel great.

The only other time I've been away from my 6-year-old daughter was 2 years ago when Trent & I took a wedding anniversary trip for 5 days. My sister pointed out that that trip was easier for me because I had a trip to look forward to. This time the roles are reversed. I didn't expect this.

Oh boy! This could be a long week. Plus, in May, I had so many plans of fun things to do over the summer with my girl. Where did the summer go? K returns on Thursday night, only to head to "Meet the Teacher Day" on Friday. What?

I'll keep myself pre-occupied with a weekend trip to Austin but I already miss my girl. Here is a photo of K this morning, counting down the days until her super fun trip to Ohio. (We've taken a photo each day this week & emailed them to PaPa Don in Ohio.) At least she is excited.

Okay, enough of my sob story. AC/DC is on the car radio singing "It's a Long Way to the Top" & we are pulling into Austin. Here's to a fun, safe weekend to all parents & their kids -- no matter the age.

Cavities Bite

So Little K is getting her 1st filling right now. Since she is crazy scared of shots, the dentist told me not to prep her. "Just bring her in."

They gave her a sip of purple juice that K said tasted like a glove. Ten minutes later, she couldn't stand up & was giggly. Really? I thought the "juice" was just going to make her calm. At least I know what to look for in my super relaxed girl.

The staff guided her down the hall & again coached me on how not to react or grab her hand to reassure her. Apparently, parents often grasp their kids' hands right before the injection. Luckily, the team was set with cartoons on the TV & tales of alligators with wide jaws. Little K lay in the dentist's chair a bit dazed & confused but no whimpering. I don't think she felt the shot & the staff was good about sneaking
The shot in where she couldn't see it. Never having a filling myself, I'm glad I had the extra coaching.

The sedative should wear off soon & her lip will not be numb by dinner. Fingers crossed. Here's to better teeth brushing. Mommy's blood pressure is sky high soon. The dentist asked if I needed a Valium but we opted against since I'm driving home. Pictures later!

Visit to Houston's Cy Twombly Gallery

Yesterday, I went to the Cy Twombly Gallery near the Menil in Houston's Museum District. My observational drawing class that started last week required the visit as we study drawing as a direct transmission between the brain and hand. If you can see it, you can draw it. Twombly, who passed away earlier this month, used numerous types of mark making to create his art. Scratching, looping, globs of paint, vibrant color, scribbles, smudges, etc. All come together to create Abstract Expressionism. While I won't pretend to be an expert on any of this, I felt like taking time to look and think about his art and really be open to it was a good exercise for this left-brained woman. At first, many think any child could create the scribble scrabble. On further examination, you see words incorporated into the piece and figures become apparent. It's interesting to say the least.

I'd recommend the Cy Twombly Gallery for middle school students and up who have a knack for art or even those who need to broaden their horizons and experience different types of art. There's no charge for entry and you could finish viewing all the art in an hour or less.

The Cy Twombly Gallery at 1501 Branard in Houston is open 11 am - 7 pm Wednesday - Sunday. As my drawing instructor suggested, the lighting is best at this gallery in mid- to late-afternoon.

Little K was dragging her feet yesterday about brushing her teeth. It was one of those days when she just didn't want to do anything that we asked her to do. In complete aggravation, Trent finally barked back at her: "Go brush your teeth or.... or we're going to do something really mean."

I looked at him and just cracked up.

"I couldn't think of anything to say," Trent told me. He just shook his head.

Even With the Best Intentions, Parents Need Help Guiding Kids Online

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with two leaders from Nominum, which is focused on "an internet to match your lifestyle." The company is now promoting and soon to be selling a technology called myi, which helps parents with an application center that controls all computers and mobile devices in your home. Parents, I think this is genius. Myi allows you to choose from a variety of apps, similar in look & feel to Apple's apps, that provide Internet security, better communication within your family and a mix of fun, too.

John Arledge presented live examples of using myi. For instance, he wants to maintain a close relationship with his family members and be able to discipline his kids with his wife, despite his heavy travel schedule. When one of his children broke a rule (didn't complete his homework, I think), John & his wife talked by phone. So that mom isn't always the "heavy" in disciplining, John who was traveling in Texas, logged into myi and used the Grounded(TM) app to take away access to the son's favorite site when he broke the rule in California. No matter which device his son tried to use in the house, he couldn't access that favorite site. Plus, all of this was done remotely from the dad's iPhone. (Yes, other mobile devices will work, too.) Awesome.

Here are a few highlights of some other apps that they offer.
House Rules allows parents to set ground rules for the type of Internet sites that are permissible in their home. It uses a filter to block common categories such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs and adult content sites but the parent chooses which content to block, using simple check boxes. If a babysitter or other adult friend visits your home and tries to view something online that falls within the blocked content list, a message appears explaining that this particular web site does not meet the house rules but please try again.

Our Time helps parents schedule time for non-screen use with a drop-down menu and calendaring options. No Internet access would be available during the set time(s) except for tools like NetFlix or streaming video. This is neat in that parents can set dedicated times each day/week just to have time to talk with family members, whether that's conversation between the parents or amongst all family members. With more and more families being "connected" via online tools, I believe there's a growing need to dedicate time to time together offline. Anyone up for a game of Scrabble?

Bedtime will be especially useful for kids in middle school and older. It turns the Internet off throughout the house during times when folks should be "in bed". Instead of your teenager sneaking a computer or mobile device into his/her bedroom to chat with friends after the parents have gone to bed, the Internet is shut down so the option for late night FaceBook discussions just aren't an option. I'm not saying any of your kids would sneak a mobile device into their bedroom but avoid the temptation. Help your kids get a good night's rest.

Wink is super cute. If, for instance, your husband likes to surf on ESPN.com or download more and more Angry Birds games at night, every time he tries to visit that particular web site, you can re-route him to, say, Tiffany.com or a web site about the vacation you keep asking for.

Crunch Time can be used by parents and kids, allowing you to block a certain web site during a time period when you need to stay focused. I could really use this to keep me off of Hotmail and FaceBook when I need to wrap up some work but would rather socialize. Think about how useful this could be for kids during homework time.

Study Hall sets rules for when kids should be doing homework. It uses filters to allow students to only access education related sites doing the set hours.

There's no hardware to buy or software to install. Everything is maintained on Nominum's servers. Phew! Best of all, you can buy one app at a time ($1.99 - $2.99 each) or get full access to all the apps they offer (a growing list) for $25.99 a year. I also like the fact that I can have all of my myi apps managed on my iPhone and if a friend is interested, I can share my apps and settings with them from my iPhone. My friend would be charged directly for the apps that I'm sharing and all my settings are immediately applied to my friend's home.. with the ability to adjust those settings at any time. It gets my friend up and running super fast.

Schools can use this to share recommended resources like books, art exhibits or web sites that are directly related to the content being studied in class.

Daniel Blasingame of Nominum likes to explain myi not as a lock down tool, but rather as a way to facilitate conversations between parents and kids. Parents choose which content, which hours and which apps to use. Myi is simply the tool. "Myi gives you a palet or tool set to choose your own settings," Blasingame said. "It's not heavy handed."

Arledge laughed, saying "It won't solve marital problems but it's a great digital assist." I agree and am really looking forward to testing myi out, hopefully, later this month when it launches officially.

Little K finished swim lessons on Wednesday and her teacher sent me this photo of Little K swimming under water. Ah.... thank goodness summer is here. Our daughter also finished her last day of kindergarten today and says she's glad not to have homework for a while. Well, me too.

July 4th Fireworks Around Town

Fireworks displays abound around town. Here are some fabulous ones, plus I’ve noted some celebrations without the sparks. Before the fireworks shows, reassure your children and let kids know that the fireworks are loud but safe.

West University’s July 4th Bike Parade starts at West U Elementary at 10 am Friday and concludes at Colonial Park with food, fun, and festivities until 2 pm.

Bellaire’s July 4th Parade begins at 9:30 am at the Bellaire Triangle with the Festival lasting until 1 pm at the Bellaire-Zindler Park.

Don’t forget the Villages Independence Parade starting at 9 am at Memorial High School with a free Festival at Memorial Drive Baptist Church until 1 pm.

The Tanglewood 4th of July Parade and Carnival is 10 am until noon at 5200 San Felipe with clowns, face painting, bounce houses and more. Call 713-552-0505 for details.

Galveston celebrates July 4th, starting with a parade at 10 am at the Railroad Museum (25th and Santa Fe Place). From there, the parade will wind its way through historic downtown Galveston from Strand to 21st; south on 21st to Postoffice; west on Postoffice to 24th, and finally south on 24th to Sealy. Following the parade, there will be a 4th of July celebration at Sealy Pavilion (24th and Sealy) with patriotic entertainment, free hot dogs and lemonade, and free American flags for the children. There will also be musical entertainment. The 20-minute fireworks show begins at 9:15 pm and will last about 25 minutes. The setting is at 37th and Seawall but the fireworks can be seen as far west as 81st and Seawall, and as far east as 14th and Seawall.

After an eventful Grandparents Day on Friday, we headed to the ranch for a little R&R. I love it this of year because yes, the weather is cooler, some of the leaves actually change colors in Navasota, TX. and we get to take hay rides.

After lunch, my dad, hubby, Little K & I ran a few errands, including making a stop at a tractor shop. I know, how glamorous. But Dad had to pick up something so Little K illustrated her back-hoe skills by using the "digger for kids" in the store. It was the same one that Dewberry Farm has so Little K was prepared. When my Dad saw her, he promised to take her on the real back-hoes just like he did with me and my sister when we were young. Fond memories.

On our way out of the store, we stopped at the entrance display and took this picture. I absolutely love Thanksgiving -- in large part because my birthday is that time of year and because it's often seems to me like the forgotten holiday. The stores go directly from Halloween to Christmas. Hay! Don't you remember how the United States of America got started? Okay, I also like American Indians but enough of that soap box.

This evening, Little K and her cousin Claire piled into the John Deere ranch buggy/ATV. I insisted on riding with the cool kids in the back while my parents drove up front. We sported a blanket since my sister threatened us with releasing stories bettter left untold if we didn't cover up her daughter when outside. (If Claire gets sick again, it's not my fault.) As we drove, our 9-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback dog hauled it, about one inch from the side of the vehicle. Mom and I were so worried that we'd run over his leg at some point. Potential ightmares ran through my head. Apparently, my mothering "worry" skills also apply to the dog. Finally, Dad stopped the vehicle and I somehow lifted the 73-pound dog into the back with the cool kids. At last, he was cool, too, and enjoyed the rest of the ride.

Tomorrow, we'll return to Houston. Despite the rainy weather, it's been a fun trip to the ranch. I've truly enjoyed spending the weekend with my niece especially. She's just over a year old and clues me into what it would be like to have a second child under foot. (This is not a wish, just an observation! Smile.) How quickly we forget that while toddlers don't have our verbal skills, they definitely understand what we're saying. She's even making me brush up on my sign language talents and Little K is learning how much you have to share with a youngster. I haven't heard her ask for a younger sibling this whole weekend. How interesting.

Beginning May 31, go on a self-guided outdoor detective adventure. Educational themes range from plants and trees to sculpture and architecture. And, starting August 2, you can also go on an indoor detective adventure. Tour the historic mansion which is filled with antique treasures from the 18th and 19th centuries. How Do You Keep Kids Safe Online?

With summer around the corner, parents like me are planning for ways to entertain the students in our lives. Unlike when I was young, kids love being on the computer and have computers or handheld devices literally at their fingertips. So how do you control which web sites they are visiting? Kids could be sitting in the same room as you but reading web sites that are too mature for them. Can people spend too much time on FaceBook?

Alex Williams wrote about this conundrum & more in the New York Times article "Quality Time Redefined". The articles states: "Nearly 60 percent of American families with children own two or more computers, and more than 60 percent of those have either a wired or wireless network to connect to the Internet, according to studies by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project. A third of all Americans log on from home multiple times a day, nearly twice the number that did so in 2004."

So what's the effect on today's children and developing family relationshipos? There are a lot of opinions about whether technology and wireless strengthen or pull apart families. Williams' article covers both sides of this debate. I still think making rules to limit the time on TV and computers is important. Then having time to read stories aloud to each other, color or play games can be allowed so kids get personal interaction with their parents but also enjoy the time online, improving typing or interactive skills.

My concern still is around controlling the content of what's being viewed on your kids computer or mobile device. I've recently learned about a soon-to-launch tool that helps parents manage who's viewing which sites, create no online time, and much more. The price is super affordable too. Check back here for more information as it becomes available and I'll share my thoughts on it. Be sure to add your comments, too. Surely I'm not the only parent wondering how to manage my daughter and the virtual realities that loom.

Free Summer Movies & Cheap Summer Movies in Houston for Kids

Looking to escape the summer heat? There are numerous movie theaters throughout Houston offering discounted or no fees for kid-friendly movies. Here are six different locations offering little to no charge for great movies all summer long. Find one by you and check out a flick.

- Studio Movie Grill at City Centre hosts children every weekend at 11 am with rated-G Kid Toons (cartoons like Olivia) for just $2. Additionally, Studio Movie Grill offers free movies for families raising children with special needs. The lights are dimmed and the volume is softer to help accommodate these children. The next opportunity is on Saturday, June 4 at 11 am when Kung Fu Panda 2 will be showing. Lastly, Studio Movie Grill kicks off the 2011Summer Series with 11 movies played over three months of summer for $1 per child and $2 per adult. Check out the schedule of upcoming movies and start planning.

- Cinemark Tinseltown (in Houston on Hwy. 290 and in The Woodlands) debut the Summer Movie Clubhouse with 10 movies shown throughout the summer for only $5 in advance or $1 at the door. A different movie will be played each week and all movies are rated either G or PG. All shows start at 10 am. Check online for the Houston schedule and The Woodlands schedule.

- For older kids, head downtown to Market Square Park to watch Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade on June 18 at 8 pm. There is no charge to attend.

- Rave Motion Pictures launches its Family Film Fest at Yorktown Crossing in Houston. Each Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am a rated G or PG movie will be played at no charge. Check out the Rave web site for updates on the schedule.

- The Houston Silverado IMAX on Hwy. 249 in Tomball welcomes families for Family Film Festival every Saturday at 10 am. Just $3.99 provides kids with "all you can eat pancakes" as well.

- Enjoy $1 movies throughout summer on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 am at The Marquee on I-10. Choose from two movies each time. The show line-up is available at The Marquee and offers a coupon to the Red Robin Restaurant in the same complex.

What Are You Telling Your Kids about Osama Bin Laden?

My husband and I were thrilled and relieved to hear the news about Osama Bin Laden on Sunday. Not that I'm celebrating his death, but I'm glad he's .... well, out of the way. I tried to explain to my 6-year-old that all our prayers for our soldiers came to fruition. How do you explain that to a child? History was made this week but I couldn't bring myself to tell her that in 2001 a horrible man orchestrated two planes to be flown into sky scrapers in New York, killing innocent people... lots of innocent people.

No, instead, we told Little K that our soldiers captured Osama Bin Laden, putting that evil man where he could hurt people no more. Our daughter asked what Osama did and I delicately told her that he didn't like Americans (or a lot of other people for that matter) because so many of us believe in Jesus Christ. That's hard for me to understand so I wasn't surprised as the wheels in her head spun.

Since then, I've talked to a few parents and they've carefully dodged the bullet on discussing this with their children. It's critical that our children feel safe so I can't blame them. Still, I was happy to show Little K the TV when Americans danced and chanted in front of the White House and in New York. "They are glad to be American, baby" I told Little K. "Thank God you live in America"

This morning, I continued to think about the recent events & wonder if the terrorists will strike back. For a moment, I worried. Then, I decided that Americans can be nervous or we can be thankful. We can be anxious or we can be prayerful. I choose to relish in being blessed. And I continue to ask my family and friends to pray for our armed forces and for peace. May this be the beginning to a more peaceful time in history. Here's hoping... and praying for our families.

Why Don't Families Take Time Off at Easter?

So it's almost Easter and I've been wondering all week why so many people take time off at Christmas to spend time with their families and go to church, but not many people take time off at Easter. I realize Easter is always on a Sunday, whereas Christmas floats on the day of the week. Still, it seems like so much of the meaning is lost on Easter. No, I'm no holy roller but family time is so precious to me and Easter really is what Christianity is all about. Go figure.

I remember years ago when I worked for another company as their marketing manager, one of our executives always held the annual planning meeting on Good Friday and "enticed" us to come by bringing in breakfast, lunch and snacks. Hmmm... Like this executive, I am Catholic so we don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent and we fast on Good Friday. So I would sit watching everyone eating pizza or BBQ during the meeting while I wondered why it was critical that this meeting be held on Good Friday. The message was clear to me: this job was supposed to be a priority.

Today, I have my own business but when a customer calls, we answer. However, I'm knocking off early this Good Friday, won't be stuck in a room full of meat eaters and I've traded in a view of a cubicle wall for the ranch. It makes for a gorgeous backdrop behind my laptop that's outside. The wind blowing in my hair adds refreshment and creative juices to my writing. All the time, my daughter and her cousin Claire can play together. I also avoid a long commute home and instead can just turn off the computer to help my parents prepare for Easter or go to church. What's more, I think families can find a sense of calm, of peace, when they can really focus on their families and the meaning of Easter.

Interestingly, at HP (one of our customers), most people take weeks of vacation time at Christmas, often because they have so much vacation time stored up. Some people even took Thanksgiving through the day after New Years Day off! Wow! However, I have only heard about one person taking this week off. I suppose the kids had Spring Break recently but I haven't even heard people taking off a day. Maybe a few will leave a bit early but after all, it's Friday.

I'm really looking forward to the Easter weekend and spending time with my family. My daughter told me today about the stations of the cross and how a woman named Veronica wiped Jesus' face when he was on his way to be crucified. (They had a reenactment at her Catholic school today.) I don't think I even knew the name Veronica when I was 6 years old, much less the significance. Is the meaning lost on you and your kids? I hope not. The bunnies may be out this weekend but this family is thanking God for all that He has given all of us. It's hard to realize the depth of what Christ did for us, but sometimes the thoughts of a child can remind us of how blessed we are.

Baytown Nature Center

After presenting to a MOPs group in Baytown today, I got lots of tips on family-friendly things to do in that area. Thank you, moms!

We began yet another field trip, this time with Daddy, too! We visited the Baytown Nature Center, which has recently

started a new addition. We liked the children's playground that featured carvings from trees that fell during various hurricanes. Little K Really liked the slide & exploring in the area. She even found a lady bug. The Center has big expansion plans & we were impressed with the master plan that we saw from a board member. Here's hoping all the funding comes through so the Center can continue it's build-out.

We wandered over to the pier to watch ships heading out to sea while men fished. The sea breeze felt good softly blowing on our faces.

The land once was a neighborhood that was wiped out during Hurricane Alicia. I suppose

the broken bricks near the bay are remnants.

We crossed the Fred J. Hartman bridge (photo above) to head to the San Jacinto Monument & Battleship Texas. Who said skipping school (kindergarten) wasn't educational?

Houston Zoo

On Tuesday afternoon, I took Little K to the Houston Zoo as some spring break fun. We had a great time but will never return during Spring Break. We spent

~45 minutes trying to find a parking place -- any parking place. It was uber frustrating! I'd love to see the City of Houston & the Houston Zoo partner to invest in a parking garage for that area. I'd pay for parking if it didn't take almost an hour to find a spot.

Any ways...

Finally, we entered & lived looking at all the usual animals. For the first time we visited the aquarium section & Little K was thrilled with the clear tube that she crawled through, going right through the aquarium. Fish were everywhere!

I also liked listening to the kookaburra birds, which really sounded like they were laughing (just like the song)! The cheetahs were gorgeous too! The only bad thing (besides the parking) was that we ran out of time before we saw every animal! Guess we'll have to return again soon!

Several people have asked me

about Galveston Mardi Gras being kid-friendly. Yes, you can find some good clean fun on the seawall at day parades.

This weekend we attended the

Krewe of Aquarius parade & had a ball. At the day parades the themes tend to be more kid-oriented with fire trucks in the event & giveaways like stuffed animals, cups & of course beads.

Check 2 of the family-friendly parades next weekend (the first weekend of March). The Children's parade starts at 1 pm, followed by the Pet Parade at 2 pm on Sunday on the seawall. It's a fun couple of events after church. Hope ti see you there!

Go Texan Day in Houston

Today is Go Texan Day in Houston. While other cities just don't get this annual celebration, we absolutely love the hats, horses & friendly chatter. Although I raced to my daughter's dance at school from a required business meeting, I made it in time for the finale. I haven't yet mentioned denting someone else's bumper as I whipped into my parking spot but oh well.

It's always fun to see the kids country & western dance. I remember dressing up & dancing with my annual partner Kris Lambert while in elementary school. It was a good break from the norm.

Again this year, we waved to the trail riders as they journeyed south on Shepherd. They make a put stop at the Sears so kids can pet & ride the horses, check out the chuck wagons & talk to the cowboys & cowgirls. Reminder: this is right in the middle of the 4th largest city in the U.S., but it feels like a small town. We are looking forward to seeing these trailriders on TV tomorrow during the Rodeo Parade. Too fun! Yew haw!

Who's Preparing for Mardi Gras?

This morning as I got ready for church, I decided I'd wear the pearls that my father-in-law gave me for Mardi Gras 2 years ago. I looked in my jewelry box but they weren't there. Our house is on the market so I worried that someone grabbed them from my hidden spot. Nah. I likely put them with my costume jewelry by accident. I checked but the necklace wasn't there either. I double checked both places again. Little K & I recited: " Tony, Tony, look around. Something's lost & can't be found."

I looked again but nada.

I went downstairs to tell Trent with tears bursting from my eyes. On top of it all, we are 1 week from the 1 year anniversary of my FIL's passing. Ugh.

"Check the vegetable crisper & I'll look upstairs," Trent said. Oddly, my MIL found a diamond tennis bracelet in the vege crisper so it's not that odd of a statement. Unfortunately, it wasn't there either.

I followed my husband upstairs on the search. He looked in the same spots but nothing. Then we looked everywhere else & Little K looked through her jewels. I feared the worst. Gone!

Then Trent said: "Are these them?"He pointed to the small stash of my favorite Mardi GRAS beads from over the years. They hung in my closet. There on top of them all ...was my pearl necklace. What? I would never have put the pearls there. But since my FIL loved Mardi Gras, I wondered.

Denis' Seafood is a Great Restaurant for Families

We have been going to Denis' to eat for years. Somehow I've forgotten to post a review on its kid-friendliness. We went there again today & Little K ordered a bowl of shrimp gumbo.

The staff was exceptional, bringing a high chair for her doll & a small tea cup for the doll.

Of course, I loved the gumbo that I had & Trent enjoyed his lobster bisque & sea scallops. You will love the super fresh seafood!

Making a Christmas Poster

It's a beautiful afternoon in Houston. Our indoor Christmas decorations are up so my husband bravely agreed to hang the out door lights. Years ago, he chastised me for singing & dancing to Christmas carols while I was holding the ladder. Atop the ladder was my husband, bouncing around amidst strings of lights!

Today, Little K needed help "finding something to do" & I wanted her within eyesight. We decided to set up an outdoor art studio, where Little K could paint a Christmas poster. Instead of wearing a beret, she donned a Santa hat!

I helped write in pencil "Merry Christmas!" & then she painted over the cheerful message. Then she added her own designs. To dry, we hung her masterpiece on the gate, which again proved to be a good display area. It was a nice way to spend time outside with my daughter.

Singing the Meaning of the Holidays

So Thanksgiving is just 2 days away and I don't like it when we forget about Thanksgiving and jump straight into a shopping spree-induced holiday season. So when my husband sent me this link http://www.philly.com/philly/video/106492678.html, I was hesitant to open it. I'm so glad I did.

When you see and hear things like this, it brings the best of both Thanksgiving and Christmas to mind... and heart. My daughter loved this music and enjoyed looking for the people who wore the big buttons because they are the singers. Great publicity, too! What do you think of this?

Thanksgiving Art Work

This morning, Little K & her CiCi made this little Indian. They took a tangerine from CiCi's tree in her back yard. They carefully taped two yellow leaves to the back of the fruit. Then they pushed cloves into the front of the fruit to make the face. Ta da! Thanksgiving art work.

So it's the eve of Halloween & we're on the way to a Halloween party in Galveston. Little K lost her red hood, which was the key piece in her handmade-by-her-Grand "Little Red Riding Hood" costume. My husband just announced that he forgot his cowboy hat (he was dressing like a western bandit!) and Nestle recalled Raisinets & lollipops because they failed to mention that peanuts are in the candy. Really? As a mother of a child with a severe peanut allergy, that's a big miss! Nestle should have been more responsible.

All this said, the weather in Houston is gorgeous & I'm thankful for my family. We had a great time at the St. Rose School fall festival last night & I'm eager to learn how much money the school earned from the event. (In spite of the fun, it's still a fundraiser, you know.)

My fingers are crossed that my daughter will have no run-ins with peanuts this weekend. It's a high alert holiday when you have a peanut allergy. I hope Little K & all kids revel in the spirited fun of Halloween. I can't stop smiling when I see all the great costumes. Too fun!

Masquerade Ball at the Houston Symphony for Kids

This morning, Little K (aka Little Red Riding Hood) and I went to the 10 am Houston Symphony performance - Weatherford Family Concert. The theme was "Masquerade Ball" so kids were encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes. It really helped the guests get into the Halloween spirit.

The music was fantastic and the conductor was great about explaining what the music was describing in advance of playing a piece -- super for young audiences. I liked the chance to snuggle in our seats with my daughter and relax for almost an hour. We heard music from Ghostbusters, Night on Bald Mountain and Danse Macabre. Fantastic! Plus, the symphony put projections of jack o'lanterns, witches and ghosts on the walls to tie into the music. Even Little K was excited to tell her daddy about the music.

On our way out, we found Radio Disney playing games and music outside Jones Hall. It was a good end to the morning. I highly recommend season tickets to the Houston Symphony's Weatherford Family Concerts. It's ~ $100 for the annual subscription for one child and one parent with a symphony each quarter. One performance is at 10 am and a second on is at 11:30 am. Here's the line up for the rest of the year:

- Saturday, Dec. 4: Raymond Briggs' classic The Snowman (with a visit from Santa)
- Saturday, Feb. 19: Music from The Lion King
- Saturday, April 2: Symphony in Space with tunes from Star Wars and ET

Fishing Tales

All this fishing this evening reminds me of a funny fish tale. When I was young, Dad took me fishing regularly at Grandfather's ranch.

Once, I was apparently quite talkative. The trees lazily hung above us in a canopy. Dad just wanted a few fish.

"Megan, If you keep talking, you'll scare the fish away. You have to be quiet," Dad said.

My little brain suddenly flooded with hundreds of questions for dear Dad. Finally, one burst from my lips: "Where are fish's ears, Daddy?"

It was suddenly time to go & I had no idea why. Patience is priceless but so are good fish tales with Dad.

Scarecrow Festival in Chapel Hill, TX

Today, we decided to take our first trip to the Scarecrow Festival in Chapel Hill, Texas. It was really fun.

They had tons of booths with items for sale like a traditional street festival. They had an area for the kids that included a small ferris wheel ($5), a train ($3), a petting zoo ($3) with the cutest pot belly pig baby & much more. Of course, the costs add up quickly.

Food ranged from everything on a stick, fried Twinkies & potato chips, gyros, sausage, snow cones, fruity tea, lemonade, beer & much more. Dieters: be ware!

Little K's favorite part was getting her face painted & getting a unicorn doll now named Abby.

The adults had fun, too, walking around & enjoying the nice weather. Trent said: "I went all the way to the Scarecrow Festival & all I got was poor!' it was really fun though. I'd like to go to the Scarecrow Festival in Brenham tomorrow to do a comparison. Maybe they'll have more scarecrows. I'm not sure I can convince my family to get up tomorrow to go though. We'll see.

Addressing Obesity in Our Children

I think this is a great idea so I have to share. According to the American Heart Association, "currently, 25% of the nation’s children are showing early warning signs of heart diseases, but this can be undone."

Our own family set out just last week to eat healthier and be more active. I know, it's only been a week but we all have to start somewhere. Check out the following facts about childhood obesity and health in general and then learn how your family can do more to care for each others' health.

So which Tuesdays are the free days. I checked out the Zoo's web site and found: "the Houston Zoo will offer free admission to our guests on the first Tuesday of every month from 2 p.m. until closing. During the months that Daylight Saving Time is in effect, the Houston Zoo closes at 7 p.m. (last admission at 6 p.m.). During Central Standard Time, the Houston Zoo closes 6 p.m. (last admission at 5 p.m.)."

Snow Cone Time

That Pizza Place on Ella

We are now trying "That Pizza Place on Ella", formerly Double Dave's. My salad was fresh & the beer was cold. Trent's Stromboli & my calzone is in the oven. There is a good variety of pizzas, subs & more here.

This is a fun, casual pizza joint for families. They have an air hockey table & a handful of video games. The big screen TV caught my eye, too. My favorite part is the wooden patio in the back, which is great for parties & even a DJ. While they will deliver (713-686-3283), kids will enjoy the joint.

Have a Splash at Discovery Green

I've been "itching" to take Little K to the fountains at Discovery Green this summer. When I realized last week that summer was almost over and we had not made atleast one visit, I sent a text to my sister Colyn.

Want to go to Discovery Green fountains? Please say "yes".

Luckily, Colyn agreed. Last night, we took the girls just before 5 pm downtown to the fountains. My sister had not yet been there but seemed to really like it. Her daughter Claire (age 2) and my 5-year-old loved every minute of it. I really like that the fountains will slowly increase in height and strength and then stop altogether.

"Where'd the water go, Claire?" I kept asking my niece. My daughter echoed. She'd look around & around & around until finally, the water started up again. It gives the kids a bit of suspense. I just like to watch.

Looks like we'll make a repeat trip since I deleted ACCIDENTALLY all the great photos that I took of them playing in the water. Oh well. We always need fun things to do. Hope to see you there. I've posted here some of my favorite photos from the fountains at Discovery Green Park. Enjoy!

Burn Off Some Energy

Little K was bored to tears (almost). I promised an adventure after I finished my work. She stood close by, watching over my shoulder as I typed. (Clearly, she's never heard the tale about the watched kettle that won't boil!) She didn't have camp that week because we were heading out of town to see my grandparents in Ohio in a few days. Trent & I would take turns entertaining her throughout the week. (That does bring up the point that my mom stayed at home with me when I was little but didn't entertain me every moment of the day. Perhaps I'll save that for another blog post.)

Finally, it was her turn. I had promised that we'd head to the "jumpee thing" at Memorial City Mall before school started. She never seems to forget those promises. So, we drove over, parked and head for adventure. (Enter near Eyemasters and Target.) After a short wait, I paid maybe $10, and the excitement began. The staffer strapped Little K into the harness and she jumped for 5 very long minutes on a contraption that seems like a twist between a trampoline and an bungee cord jump. She loved it and eventually figured out how to flip herself over once she was mid-air. It was cute... and did I mention EASY?

Next, she stepped over to the rock wall, was again strapped in, and then she looked a bit confused. "Get to climbing, girl," I told her.

Honestly, what did she think she was signing up for? I didn't push it.

Little K gave it a good shot and I was surprised when she was so close to the top, she slid down. But there's a bell to ring at the top so everyone knows you accomplished your goal, I thought. Okay, so there are a few differences between my daughter and me but only a few. She gave it another try but gave out a bit sooner. I really think her little legs had just been through enough.

My new secret weapon: the "Jumpee thing" at Memorial City Mall. Little K slept like a baby that night. I smiled in glory! My only regret? I can't find my photos and video on my iPhone. Darn!

After a yummy breakfast of homemade biscuits & gravy, we met Aunt Patti & cousin Bentley at the movie theater at The Greene. We watched "Toy Story 3" & really enjoyed it.

Afterward, we walked around the outdoor mall (like Town & Country Villages in Houston). When we returned to the car, a family had run into my PaPa Don's parked car! Luckily, they stayed to talk to a police officer until we showed up. That was our only downer of the trip, except PaPa Don's ear ache. Here's hoping his doctor appointment Tuesday returns good news & the accidental driver pays for the car repairs.

We're waiting for our flight in Dayton & are oddly ready for home. I'm craving our schedule & a bit more play time before Little K heads to kindergarten this Friday. Where did the summer go?

Young's Dairy Farm

During our Ohio trip, we went to Young's Dairy Farm for our first time. It's similar to Dewberry Farm in Houston but has a large dining area that focuses on dairy products (although burgers are available).

A video shows how the staff males the cheese. The ice cream was tasty but too much for us to eat. Little K enjoyed the outdoor activities with our Barrett family. Perhaps we worked off some of our calories.

Dig Taters

Many moons ago, my mom, sister & I came to Ohio in August to escape the Houston heat. The other years, we came in early June to celebrate the start of summer. June trips also meant pea picking.

This August, we found the weather in the low 80s. PaPa Don blamed the lack of peas on the rabbits as he had done in years past, although it is really past harvest time. I in turn taught my daughter the potato song:

"This summer I went to Ohio.
I went there to help PaPa pick peas.
The rabbits arrived there before me.
Dig taters cuz there ain't no peas.
Taters, taters, dig taters cuz there ain't no peas!"

When Little K found a little potato, she hollered "Souper!" since the little taters go in Grammy's soup. When she found the big potatoes, she threw up her hands & yelled "Mongo!", taking after cousin Lauren when she was a youngster (She turns 24 today).

I took a turn at digging up green onions & garlic, which I taste tested. It had such a strong flavor! I've since been told that I should brush my teeth. Oh well. I've freshened my green thumb & Trent is helping me with our own garden ideas.

Pa Pa Don Still Makes the Best Pancakes

Add together 2 eggs, 1/4 tsp

vanilla, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1 Tb cooking oil, "some milk". Mix well in the mixer.

Put in a cup of Hungry Jack

pancake mix. Mix well. Add in more pancake mix as needed.

The mixer seems to really get the pancakes fluffy. However, the true test is in the tasting. Yummy pancakes! Thanks, PaPa Don.

Mini Burgers & Good Memories

Little K earned $2 this morning by picking up all the twigs that fell after last night's Ohio t-storm. We then went to a local rummage sale, where she bought coloring pages for 50 cents.

We'd worked up quite the appetite so we drove to the Hamburger Wagon in Miamisburgh, OH.

My PaPa Don says the original owner sold the famous mini burgers for just 10 cents each.

They now go for $1.10 each but are cooked right in front of you & are delicious!

My sorority little sister replied to my FaceBook post about this & says she has fond memories of this "monument", too.

Of course, there is the distinct possibility that we both love this place because our grandfathers have brought us here for years.

Baby Birds Need Space

This morning, we took a peak at

two baby Robbins that were nestled in a nest outside of my grandparents' big window. Little K thought they "were so cute".

Unfortunately, my mug got too close & one of the baby birds lept out of the nest. The mother & father bird quickly flew into action but the baby couldn't fly back into the nest! We obviously backed WAY back but we'll keep a eye on the little feathered friend.

Little K was quite upset with me, claiming I didn't even apologize to the baby bird for scaring it. Ha!

Good Start to our Trip to Great-Grandparents

So each summer, we make a trip to visit my maternal grandparents, Little K's great-grandparents, in Dayton, Ohio. We also have aunts, uncles & cousins there. Each year, it proves such a rewarding experience... for me. The opportunity for my daughter to really get to know her great-grandparents is truly priceless.

We landed today to be greeted by PaPa Don & Grammy. An hour or so later, we arrived at their house & Little K promptly headed out to PaPa Don's garden. She picked okra, green

beans, baby pumpkins, cherry tomatoes & even luscious, big, juicy tomatoes! The funniest part is that my mom said they were "her tomatoes" but she didn't fly up here to eat them! Her. Her. Eat your.... Tomato out!

Our Circus Act

As I mentioned in my July newsletter, we visited the circus. I'll post photos later. We arrived early to see the pre-show of animals up close. So glad we did. We saw zebras, tigers, horses, elephants, clowns getting dressed for the show & lots if tricks. We even saw an elephant paint on an easel!

The circus is in town for ~2 more weeks. I highly recommend going as a family. Even this Mommy was wide-eyed!

Pirates Take over Summer Camp

It's "Dress Like a Pirate" Day at Summer Safari (camp) and we really got into it.

I actually drew up a treasure map (on a torn grocery paper bag) with hints around the house for Little K to follow to the treasure chest. We'll do that after Daddy and Little K return from camp and the pediatrician. (A bad case of the coughs make it hard for my little pirate to say "Arrr!")

With a white t-shirt, brown pants and a bandana on her head, my sweet girl headed to camp with her map in hand. Upon arrival, the camp counselor was preparing the kids with temporary tattoos. So cool!

Earlier in the week, they had made pirate hats from black construction paper. The treats today included a wristband compass, an eye patch and a necklace. Activities are including: walk the plank (an old mattress), water balloon toss to the other pirates' sail (a bed sheet with a pirate image across it) and more. I can't wait to hear about the day's activities.

It seems like this theme would also be great for a pirate birthday party. How fun!

Stay Dry in Houston while Painting Your Own Pottery

After a day of Summer Safari (camp), the rain started pouring really hard at our house. Still, Little K and I wanted to do something special together. So, we headed to Young at Art Studio in the Heights.

Once there, we dried off and then picked two large tiles to paint. At left, Little K shows off her tile with a collage of flowers on a red background. Apparently, I was taking too long because my daughter also had time to color a page with markers and stamps, thanks to Mrs. Laura's creativity.

At the end, we headed back out into the downpour to return home. We'll pick up our tiles next week after they've been fired. We're hoping to do enough off them to create a new tile top on my old sewing machine table. Good thing we started last summer!

Young at Art Studio is still one of our favorite ways to get out of the Houston heat or rain. Maybe we'll see you there.

I had a 7:30 am flight to Fort Worth this morning for work. Trent & Little K agreed to take me since my car is in the shop. At 5:30 am, I gently woke my daughter, saying it was time to go to the airport.

My sleepy girl arose, grabbed her baby dolls & headed to Daddy's car.

"I can't believe I'm in my PJs," she said sleepily with a slight sound of a giggle.

"I can't believe we are driving at this hour!" I replied. It was still dark outside. All in a day's work, right?

After my meetings, I head back to the airport. Surprise! Flight delay! Oh, I'll be home soon if those Houston storms will clear.

The Day After Father's Day

This morning, Little K awoke and found me at the computer, working away. I convinced her to get dressed and then gently wake up her daddy.

Instead, Little K went into our bedroom, climbed up on her father and said: "Daddy, wake up. It's Kids Day!"

Today, following Father's Day, we both chuckled but my husband is quick even upon first waking.

"Good!" he said. "Since it's not my day, I'm going back to bed. Or should I put you to bed?"

"No way, Daddy!" Little K giggled. It was a good start to the day.

The other weekend I bought some new face lotion that smells so aromatic. It's wonderful! So earlier this week I put it on as Little K got in bed. As she called for her bed-time prayers, I took a deep breath of my relaxing-scented lotion & calmly walked into Little K's room. She's gonna love the smell, I thought.

As I laid down on the bed, Little J commented, indeed.

"Mommy, you smell like Daddy's shaving cream," she said, scowling.

So I'm stuck in traffic on 249 so I'll take a minute to blog.

Little K is in her second week of summer camp, which means no uniforms. Well, that is except for my daughter, who keeps picking out her uniform shorts and skorts to wear. I told her she could wear any of the shorts in her drawer for camp. Nope. She keeps going to her closet to get those uniform skorts. At least the uniform bottoms are solid navy so it's not super obvious. And a change if shirts is a good cover. Who knew I wasn't the only sucker for the uniform?!

Last week was Little K's last trip to pre-k & I was surprised at my reaction to the milestone. I was surprised the year flew by so fast & that my baby completed her first year in elementary school.

Little K at first said she didn't want to go to kindergarten because they have homework & that's boring. She later admitted that she didn't know what "boring" meant.

After meeting both kindergarten teachers, she's looking forward to it. Phew!

Today my husband dropped her off at her first day of summer camp. She was ready at 7 am! Wow! I'm sitting at the doctor's office for my annual check-up, wishing I could have dropped off Little K. Well, there is tomorrow.

Cool Culture for Kids and Adults in Houston

I like to introduce various cultures to our family but it can be difficult at times to share these with a youngster. However, here is a clever way to explore some Hispanic culture and enjoy a break from the day.

The Artisan Jewelery Bazaar will be held on Tuesday, May 4 from 5 - 8 pm at Under the Volcano, located at 2349 Bissonnet. This is a sale of Colombian and Mexican artwork and artisan jewelry with part of the proceeds benefiting "The Vagina Monologues" and La Rosa Womens' Shelter. While I don't advise taking children to the bar, this event provides a short break for adults and then an opportunity to talk about how the art and jewelry were created and how the pieces reflect the Colombian and Mexican culture. My daughter would love the jewelry and I appreciate the lessons about different cultures.

Go Astros!

Last Saturday, we decided to go to the Astros game. It was fairly unlike us to make a last-minute decision like that but I'm so glad we did. We sat on an upper level but just to the left of home plate. The view was really pretty good. Plus, I could see Astros owner Drayton McLane sitting in the front row of the first level so I was pleased.

It wasn't long before Little K was asking for a treat. Before I knew it, she had struck a deal with her daddy to go to the Astros shop after the 4th inning. From there on out, Little K asked if it was time yet every five minutes. I tried to teach her about the game (& get her mind off of buying something she clearly doesn't need). Since Little K is playing t-ball this year for the first time, she was able to better grasp the concepts and cheered for the Astros... then asked if it was time to get a treat.

I remembered time after time when my grandparents took me and two of my cousins to Astros games in the old Astrodome. They'd feed us over & over again, plus Grandmother always brought candy for us and the other kids sitting around us. While ticket prices weren't as high as they are now, I wondered how my grandparents did this regularly for years.

Soon, it was time for the treat. Trent took Little K to the shop and returned with a huge Astros monkey. I suppose it's a "rally monkey", although the home team didn't need it. We won against the Pirates. Yeah! After the purchase, Little K's heart sang with glee. Her monkey cheered for the Astros, too, and then tickled his new fan. Indeed, we will now have a new friend to accompany us to future Astros games.

Yesterday, as we watched, the kids splashed about in the teacher's pool. They were taking turns with the instructor and supposed to be practicing the latest lessons. All I saw was a lot of splashing and smiling.

Suddenly, I started laughing so the adults (including my husband) asked what was so funny.

"When we were little, my sister used to to an inverse 'Nestea Plunge'," I said while wiping the laughter tears from my eyes. "She used to fall face first into the pool with her arms spread like an eagle and yell 'Dead Bird!' It was the funniest thing ever."

While I kept laughing, the adults looked at me oddly. What funny things kids do.

Tickle Your Kids' Art Tendencies at the Free First Sunday Event at MFAH

Families will discover the exciting world of Movement in Art. Don’t miss the innovative artists of the CORE Performance Company. They will share a dance specially created to be performed outside in the Cullen Sculpture Garden where families will also create wire sculptures full of movement and sketch beautiful works of art. Inside the museum, create a colorful paper collage, get moving on a family gallery experience led by an MFAH Educator, move your body as you listen to a story and look at contemporary art, and more.

When: 1 – 5 pm on Sunday, May 2, 2010

Week of Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22. At Little K's school, they are celebrating all week. Over the weekend, we were asked to collect recyclable products that the kids could turn into musical instruments in class. Little K took an empty, plastic coffee jar with dry pasta inside. When she shook the container, the dry pasta made "music". During class, Little K said she put beautiful stickers all over the can. Later this week, her class is going to have an Earth Day parade, making music with the items produced in class.

Today, the classes will be planting flowers around the campus as part of the celebrations. Not only will it help beautify the grounds, it also teaches the kids about nature. I love gardening with my daughter. While her attention span is still short, it's good to show her how things grow when they are nurtured. That works for plants and people. :-)

What are you doing this week in celebration of Earth Day? I'm thinking about going to get some vegetable plants to add to our garden.

Backwards Day

Have you ever had one of those days where things seem backward? Yesterday was Little K's. After school, we begged her to get her swim suit and a cover-up on so we could run by a networking event in the Heights and then head to Little K's swimming lessons at 6:10 pm. We had so much to accomplish yesterday that we were literally running from place to place. Finally, my husband Trent went into our daughter's room to "encourage" her to get dressed.

After a quick networking stop, we journeyed on to swim lessons. I chatted with my husband and some other parents while Little K and two other children practiced in the pool with their teacher. I noticed that Little K's bathing suit seemed to come way down in the front. Luckily, she doesn't have anything to show but it looked really weird.

Maybe she just needs to pull up her suit, I thought.

Ten or fifteen minutes go by. I watch Little K practice her freestyle swim and she's really trying to work on her arms. Unfortunately, I'm distracted by the fact that it looks like she's wearing a skimpy bathing suit because her backside is hanging out of her swim suit. That's when it hit me.

"Trent, did you help Little K get her bathing suit on today?" I asked my husband.

"No, I told her she could do it herself," he replied. After all, she's 5, right? I get the thinking here.

"Well, she put it on backward. Look!" I said.

There went my Little K paddling away with her bottom hanging out. Maybe I should remember she's my LITTLE K.

Flash forward to dinner time. We were starving so Little K quickly changed into play clothes and we went to a restaurant to eat. By the time we got home, it was past Little K's bed time so we started putting on her nightgown. She was so exhausted from the full day that she lay on top of her bed like a wet noodle. I just looked at my husband and laughed.

"What?" Trent asked.

"Her underwear is on backwards. I've got to fix it for her," I said. "What a day!"

Spring Time Hot Tub

After a great 5th birthday (thanks to many friends), we relaxed in the back yard. Little K loved time in the hot tub but begged for the swming pool.

There's just something about

being barefoot in the spring. We got so lucky with the blue sky weather for Easter weekend. I know different families have

different traditions for this holiday but my favorite is the family time.
