Our Valentine's Day tradition is a scavenger hunt. My husband and I create three heart shaped treasure maps and hide small treats (candy bar, stuffed animal, coloring book, etc) for our daughter to find. Since she can't read yet we draw pictures of the locations she needs to find to get her prize. She loves this and talks about it every year eagerly anticipating Valentine's Day!

I am planning a heart-themed breakfast for sure! I am thinking heart shaped chocolate chip pancakes as a special treat.

I try to steer away from candy. This year I found little Valentines lunch kits and put two books for each of my girls in them. We always exchange valentines at dinner on valentines day and say what we love about each other. It always devolves into silliness.

Love, love, love the scavenger hunt idea! We haven't really had any specific Valentine's Day traditions - is almost 5 too late to start? :-) I think we're starting with a scavenger hunt this year.........

On Valentine's Dad and the kids prepare breakfast "super pancakes" filled with fruit and almonds, we all eat them together and watch a family movie on the afternoon pretending we are at the theatre, dim lights, popcorn and "kid-made" icket stubs, also we usually go to the HMNS (Houston museum of Natural Science) to their Valentine's celebration, this year is on the 13th and is called "love bugs" so it's all about hearts, love and yes! bugs!, I'm sure my two boys will love it.

Since Valentine's Day is about celebrating all types of love, not just romantic love, I think it would be a great idea to have the children make home-made Valentines cards and for the family to go together to a nursing home or hospital and visit folks who may not have anyone special visit them and present them with the residents with the cards. It will teach children the value of respecting and valuing elders and brighten someone's day for sure.

We have the Valentine's fairy visit and leave a small present for the kids at the breakfast table. The great thing about the Valentine's fairy is that she works with the same rules as Santa. If your naughty she doesn't come! Gets us a few extra weeks of good behavior. Breakfast and lunch are usually "heart" themed, and I saw a cute recipe for pancakes where you add beets to make them pink (and bonus...the kids get veggies).

The kids will celebrate with their classmates at school, so after church, we will create Valentines for the neighborhood kids. We usually have a small gathering at our house. We read Valentine stories! I love, love, love the scavenger hunt...we will try that this year!!!
