Managing Stress Amongst the To Do List & Twizzlers

So my daughter loves Twizzlers. For those of you who know me well, it's no surprise. In high school, my friend Jenny and I used to power through a family pack of Twizzlers at the blink of an eye. Yesterday, Little K got one Twizzler for going to the bathroom on the big girl potty. I asked her if I could have one small bite as I helped her get into her PJs. She grew quiet. While I had my head down, focusing on getting her feet into the PJ pants, Little K quickly shoved the whole Twizzler into her mouth. I looked up when I heard giggling. A red licorice mouth was before me, grinning. So much for sharing.

Tomorrow I'm having an MRI to make sure there's not a tumor in my head. Don't worry. There's not. After a meltdown a few weeks ago, I went to my doctor. The docs are sure it's stress-induced but want to cross off the other physical potentials before just dealing with the stress! HA! If only it was that easy. Any ways, I'm not looking forward to the hour-long MRI but I am looking forward to getting out of there & moving on to a simpler lifestyle. I've been reading this book called Breathe: Creating Space for God in a Hectic Life and have been floored at how the people in the book have experienced stress loads and symptoms just like mine. It's so interesting how I just happened to start reading this book now, even though I've had it for 1.5 year. Hmmmm....

More updates tomorrow. I told my friend Amy S. that I'l crack up if the doctors marvel at my pea-sized brain tomorrow. HA!

The Yee Haw Party

Today is Go Texan Day at Little K's nursery school, which meant the two oldest classes were invited to visit the "big kid school" (aka St. Rose Elementary in the Heights) to watch the big kids western dance. As you can tell from the photo, Little K LOVED it. Clapping, singing and saying "Yee Haw!" was right up her alley & her friends'.

It's hard to see the background of this photo but you might be able to make out the fifth graders country dancing. It was too fun, although Little K began to cry when I couldn't stay through lunch and nap time. I hope we can take her back to the Houston Livestock Show in March. It was great last year.

Flower Girl Flying High

I just went through my photos & found pics of Little K at my sister's wedding. I was a tad worried about Little K's ability to make it through the ceremony as the flower girl but it ended up fine. Unfortunately, I discovered that Little K REALLY needed a snack half way through the ceremony & I didn't bring one. Otherwise, it went off without a hitch. Here's a photo of Little K doing her "spins" in the bridal suite before the church ceremony. Too fun! I still can't believe this photo is of my almost 3 year old. How time flies!

Get Moving

Weekend Update

So we opted out of the 5k this weekend for the Family 1K and it was an absolute blast. I'll post photos this afternoon. I couldn't believe how much Little K ran. It was so cute to see her run like that... That little body was moving.

After the "big run", we decided Little K needed some new tennis shoes so we visited Stride Rite. My Grammy says that while the shoes are more expensive, they last longer and are better for kids' feet. We got two pairs of shoes for Little K, although she's insisting on only wearing one pair now.

Our next stop was Barnes & Noble to pick up a copy of Everyone Poops. No, I'm not kidding. I was embarrassed to take the book to the counter so I just pretended like my husband made me do it. Little K loves the book but I'm not sure it's having any effect on her doing "#2" on the potty. Is it wrong for me to pray for her to be potty trained? She's so close ... and then she'll have an accident. Little K is also worried about being in trouble with her teacher because apparently her teacher tells her "no, no, we don't go potty in our big girl pants." Little K then thinks she's in trouble. I'm looking for the light at the end of the tunnel.

Preparing for First 5K with a Preschooler

We're preparing for Saturday morning's "Steps 4 Students" 5K as we raise money for St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in the Heights. Little K and I discussed it this morning. Since I didn't think she'd understand what a 5K is, I told her that it's a running/walking/skipping/jumping party for St. Rose School (aka: the big kid school). I'm excited to say that St. Rose School has raised more than $20k so far for this event -- 100 percent of which goes directly to this school. St. Rose is also the top money raiser for this event out of all the schools in the Galveston-Houston archdiocese. Way to go! Wish us luck. A 5k (3 miles) is a long haul for an "almost 3" year old, especially with Mommy & Daddy in tow! HA!

There's A Stranger in My House

Yesterday, I came home for lunch but still had my mind on my work. I ran into the kitchen, put my work bag down and started pulling together some lunch. Suddenly, I heard a man's voice in my house but his voice was a bit garbled. I knew my husband was not home so I was struck still with fear. Although I stood one step from a drawer full of knives, I was paralyzed and couldn't figure out how to get to a knife to protect myself.

"Garble, garble," he said again.

What in the world is he saying, I thought with my brain racing.

"M is for Map," my daughter's talking puzzle said again from the living room sofa.

M is for MADDENING, I thought as my fear subsided. Little K had started her talking alphabet puzzle that morning, hadn't finished it before leaving for school so Mr. Puzzle continued to talk. He spoke every 10 seconds until I put all 26 alphabet pieces correctly in place. And I thought I knew my alphabet! Lyrics from country singer Ronnie Milsap's song "There's A Stranger in My House" have comically run through my head ever since.

Adjusting to School Again

My poor Little K. She just didn't want to go to school today. As we left the house, she cried because she'd forgotten her Moose from PaPa Don. I wouldn't let her go back into the house to get Moose since the door was already locked. I didn't want to set any precedents. She was upset throughout the short trip to the school & then took 15 minutes to release my leg and sit down for (some more) breakfast. Luckily, her friend Clare showed up and the world was at peace.

I ran out the door, trying to make it to a client downtown before 8 am. After 8, the parking increases from $9 daily to $20 daily. I pulled into the garage at 8:09 am. Dang it. At least the weather is beautiful.

One funny thing: the other night, Little K sang THESE words to "London Bridge is Falling Down":

I cracked up.

I'm hoping to pick Little K up from school by 4 pm daily now so that we can spend more time together. I think it makes her happier and it usually works wonders on me, too. Wish me luck.

Valentine Week Wrap Up

I hope everyone had a Happy Valentine's Day. It was one of my favorites with a no stress meal at home with Trent & Little K. Ahh.

Last night, we opened a few gifts, including one that Little K made at school. A paper heart with plenty of colors and cut-outs with a photo of my little girl in the center... with a frown. It about broke my heart. The photo was taken last Monday (I think) & my typically bubbly daughter just wouldn't smile for the photo. When I asked her why she was sad in the photo, she simply said "because". This is when my mothering instincts kicks into high gear. Last week, I had a very stressful week and, while this week has been better, I've admittedly been coming out of the fog, so to speak. While Little K loves school, I think I can sense when she needs me more. When Mommy is stressed, it affects the entire household. (Sorry.) Could my stressed-out manner negatively impact my daughter? You bet.

This morning, Little K awoke at 5:15 am. We ate breakfast together, watch a bit of TV and then read an Elmo book together. After brushing our teeth together, we drove to school & I hung out there a bit. I promised to pick Little K up early today so we could spend time together. She clung to Mommy. Well, to be honest, I'm getting my hair highlighted at 1 pm and my sister's wedding rehearsal starts at 5 pm so I better pick Little K up around 3:30 pm. I'm hoping that some snuggle time today and throughout the weekend, combined with a more upbeat Mommy will turn Little K's frown upside down. Any suggestions from my friends & readers?

Trent was quick to point out that Little K certainly could have had a tough moment or maybe just didn't want to stop playing long enough to take her photo. I don't buy that though. Here's hoping today is a good turning point.

I will say a good thing happened yesterday & this morning. Little K's Great Grandfather mailed her a mini moose stuffed animal for Valentine's Day & it's been a big hit. "Moose E. Moose" (named after a character on the Noggin Network) slept with Little K last night & was the show & tell hit at nursery school today. He's now patiently sitting in my car, waiting for us to pick up Little K from school this afternoon. Yeah. This fuzzy guy really made Little K smile.

Hershey's Kisses for Valentine's Day

There are about 20 calories in one Hershey's chocolate kiss without nuts. The fact that I just scarfed down at least 10 kisses made me laugh. After lunch, I think I'll grab another kiss and just not weigh myself tomorrow morning.

Forever Friends

Sometimes our indoor cat TJ is a real pain. Like when he cries at 5 am because he's hungry. Like when he scratches on my love seat, tearing it to shreds.

But sometimes, he's such a sweet cuddly friend. I especially appreciate how he lets Little K snuggle with him. Lately, he's been jumping into her bed more & more. It's too cute. They are forever friends.

Full Time Mom, Full Time Wife, Full Time Worker, Part Time Me?

Well, to be honest, it was a really tough week... last week, that is. This week will definitely be better. I found myself in a HUGE funk. After a meltdown, my parents suggested that Little K spend the weekend with them so that Trent & I could melt off some stress. Friday night, we went to the Houston Symphony's love-themed performance (courtesy of my parents) and relaxed a bit. Afterward, Trent asked "Where to now?" Completely out of character, I said: "Home. I'm exhausted." So home we went.

Saturday, I got double doses of much-needed sunshine doing a bit of pruning in our backyard and swinging in my hammock under the blooming magnolia tree. We caught the movie "27 Dresses" and loved it! Then, we grabbed some Mexican food at a local favorite and made it home in time for the news and "Saturday Night Live."

Another good night's sleep and I'm feeling better... more relaxed, I guess but things still seem to be moving faster than I am. I'm going to try to make a bit more time for me and cut back a bit at work and volunteering. Hopefully, that'll work.

In the midst of it all, Trent forwarded to me a really interesting article on raising children without nagging or whining. Check out "Praise A Child Right, and You'll Get Results." I think I'll check out the book and see how the suggestions work in practice.

Fat & Happy on Fat Tuesday!

We had a great time this past weekend at Galveston Mardi Gras. I was a bit worried about more raucous crowds than usual. In the past, there's been a $20 fee per person to get onto the Strand, but this year there was no entry fee at all. Fortunately, the day time provided a festive atmosphere for all. Little K especially liked dangling Mardi Gras beads for the second story of a building and then tossing them to her "friends" on the streets below. Boy, can this kid tease!

Monday proved to be a lot of fun for Little K at nursery school. Since her primary teacher is an LSU grad, Mardi Gras was in full swing. Each child picked out two necklaces and made a Mardi Gras mask. At some point during the day, Little K's class visited the other class rooms to shake their beads and shout "Happy Mardi Gras!" Too fun.

This morning, Little K was not about to head to school without a photo of her adorned mask. Let the good times roll! We now have so many Mardi Gras beads that I'm stepping all over them. I think I'll take some to our Mardi Gras party tonight at the church. It'll be relatively tame but celebratory. Happy Fat Tuesday to all!

Fun, Healthy Food

Who knew healthy food could be so fun? And easy to put together! Little K made this nutritious creation two nights ago. It includes a whole wheat tortilla, cream cheese, and lots of veggies. Too fun! I'll include more fun ideas for healthy eating in the February newsletter... coming out tomorrow.

Dance Party

"I can't believe it's Sunday already," I said this morning as my husband woke me for church. The last 2 weeks have just flown by.

After church, we returned home for lunch and cookie baking. This week is Catholic Schools Week so our cookies are treats for the teachers and staff at St. Riose Elementary School in the Heights. Well, the cookies that my husband hasn't already eaten. As fast as I lay them on the plate, he eats them.

While we waited for the cookies to bake, Little K and I enjoyed another "Dance Party." I turned the TV to the '70s music channel and we hit the dance floor (a.k.a. the living room). Little K quickly invited all her stuffed animals to join us & Trent snapped a photo of this finer moment.

Kid-Friendly Mardi Gras 2008

Looking for something fun to do next weekend with the kids? Dress in purple, green &/or yellow. It's Mardi Gras time in Galveston and YES, there is a great parade for your family. The Children's Parade is sponsored by the Galveston Firefighters and is good, clean fun. Starting at 2 pm, your family will see an array of characters, clowns and (of course) fire fighters in this celebration. The float participants toss stuffed animals, plastic cups, beads and candy to children cheering them on. Last year, Little K loved it. Happy Mardi Gras!

Challenger Tragedy Remembered

NASA Astronaut flies Challenger Learning Center mission with students
On anniversary of Challenger tragedy, presents mission patches that flew on STS-

WHAT: On the anniversary of the Challenger tragedy, a NASA astronaut will lead an all-student crew on a simulated mission to Mars. In a ceremony dedicated to the spirit of the Challenger 51-L astronauts, he will present a flag and plaque with a DVD containing Challenger Learning Center mission patches that flew on the recent STS-120 mission.

WHO: NASA Astronaut Scott Parazynski, STS-120 mission specialist and member of the board of trustees of the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Dr. Parazynski has logged over eight weeks in space and traveled over 23 million miles.

Carolyn Sumners, Ed.D., Vice President of Astronomy & Physics, who led the creation of the world’s first Challenger Learning Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

WHEN: Jan. 28, 2008

Dr. Parazynski will present a museum flag and a DVD plaque to Carolyn Sumners. The flag and DVD flew on STS-120, carrying images of patches created for over 400 missions in the Challenger Learning Center, representing the work of over 15,000 students. Images of these patches will be available at www.hmns.org beginning Jan. 28.

Dr. Parazynski leads a Mission to Mars with a student crew from HISD’s Hartman Middle School. These students are participating in the ExxonMobil Career Challenge program, which gives them the opportunity to sample the science and engineering careers possible in 21st-century Houston.

So I'm flipping through these women's magazines for work when I suddenly realize I may now be more of a Family Circle reader than a Cosmo reader. When did that happen? Rather than stopping him in his tracks with my good looks, I'm okay with my slicked-back pony tail so I can try out that new recipe and pick play-dough up off the floor.

Pest Control

This morning, Little K & I got dressed & started picking up the house. I explained that the man for Houston Pest Management was coming to get rid of the bugs in our house. Little K looked at me and said: "But we like Lady Bugs & we like Butterflies."

I smiled and assured her that we'd talk to the exterminator to ensure he wouldn't hurt the lady bugs or butterflies. Too cute.

Later, with Little K singing parts of "Frosty the Snow Man" in the back seat, we drove to the doctor so mommy could feel better. I thought it would be good for Little K to see that even moms go to the doctor & that it doesn't have to be a scary event. Plus, she is out of school today for MLK Day so I didn't have a choice. The verdict? S is for sinus infection and A is for antibiotic. (I wanted to put D is for drugs here but thought some moms might be offended. Oops. Too late now.) I was told that I should feel like Miss America in seven days. What an improvement!

Tomorrow, Little K returns to nursery school & I head back to work. After completing a whirlwind trip to Dallas for a friend's wedding this weekend, I think we're all ready for a return to normalcy, including Little K's regular nap schedule. Smile.

Do As I Say

Little K cracks me up. This morning, she said her eye was hurting so I ran some hot water over a wash cloth and told her to gently wash her eye.

"It's all better now!" she exclaimed after washing her face.

The next thing I know, she's washing her entire body, body part by body part, because she said her knee was hurting. Then, her stomach was hurting... You get the drift. Too funny...

My sister and I went to look at two bridal gowns on Sunday. Colyn had narrowed the selection down to just these two. The first one I really wasn't crazy about but the second one... WOW. It was gorgeous. She is still not sure of the date but is working on it. It's exciting.

This morning on the way to nursery school, Little K told me that her "Juji" (nickname for my sister) was getting married. "Yep," I said.

"And I'm getting married," Little K responded.

"Oh, no you're not," I jumped in. "You need to be much older because when you get married, you can't live with me any more." Little K agreed that she should wait then.

Artist of the Sky

Earlier today, I was thinking about our holidays and remembered the cutest thing that Little K said. We were on our way to Galveston to visit my in-laws. It had been a long day and nearing dinner time. From the back seat, my husband & I could hear Little K starting to whine. She was tired of being in her car seat and needed a distraction.

My mind raced to find some diversion. We started looking out the window at the clouds. It was nearing sunset and the clouds shimmered in pinks, oranges and purples. I was amazed at the beauty as Little K carefully described the sight. She grew quiet momentarily and then asked, "Who painted the sky?"

Trent & I looked at each other & smiled. It was such a cute thought.

"Who do you think painted the sky," I asked. "Who made it?"

Little K concluded that God painted it and my head must have grown a number of feet wider. (Well, at least I'm honest.) But I also felt so lucky at that moment. That my daughter had noticed nature's beauty right in front of us all. It's a great reminder to me.

The Land of Curiosities

Here is a new development on being environmentally-friendly and teaching kids about history and caring for the environment in a fun way. This new book series tells stories about young characters in the 1800s. The first book in the series is called The Land of Curiosities and finds two children who move from New York and later experience the development of the world's first national park, Yellow Stone Park. While set in a historical setting, the kids' adventures is what makes it fun, according to the company owner. The author explains that the environmental messages are woven into the storyline so readers don't feel as if it's being beaten into their heads. The back of each book will include ~ 10 pages of history about Yellow Stone Park or in future books, history about the book's setting. The books target readers age 8-16 years.

The company behind the book series is EcoSeeker, a brother & sister duo, hoping to gain Harry Potter status with the books and then motivate readers to take the EcoSeeker pledge to care for the environment.

Catching Up After the Holidays

Okay so I haven't been blogging lately and it's only because my world has been spinning a bit. The holidays presented my Grandfather-in-law's funeral, followed by my sister's engagement announcement. Wow!

Also, I'm excited to say that Little K gave all of her pacifiers to her cousin because she is a "big girl." Yes, my 2.5 year old no longer has a paci. I can't believe it's taken this long. She's had a few problems soothing herself when she wakes up from a nap. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised considering she's comforted herself one way for SOOOO long. The funny thing is that Little K has not taken a pacifier at school since she was a year old. Go figure.

Big progress was also made this weekend on the potty training front. We're not all the way there but the fact that Little K will sit on the pot and give herself a chance is good. Yeah!

Little K is back at nursery school this week full time so Mommy can get caught up on work. Hmmm... that's what I should be doing now. Gotta run.

New Year's Noon Party Great for Kids

If you're looking for a way to ring in the New Year with your kids, it can be challenging. Who really wants to keep the kids up that late and get them stirred up so they can't sleep until 3 am? The Children's Museum of Houston offers a family-friendly event each year called the New Years Noon Celebration.

We loved this last year. Read the post & see a few photos at http://kidsactivityqueen.blogspot.com/2006_12_31_archive.html. If you're planning to be in Houston, add this to your calendar. Kids can make noise makers to use later on & create a "parade float" to where in the indoor parade. A kid-friendly band takes center stage to get families jazzed up about the New Year and then the countdown begins at 11:45 AM. Yes, this is held during the day on New Year's Eve. At the strike of noon, confetti colors the air and noise rings out. Little K was a bit awe-struck for the first minute but then quickly decided that the confetti was cool. This event gets a big thumbs up from our family. Hope you enjoy it, too.

Day 1 & 2 of Chicago Trip

Day 1 of our trip to Bloomington, IL. for my husband's grandfather's funeral was an adventure. The security personnel took my face lotion so I'm quite sure I'll look like an unravelled mummy by the time the trip concludes. Otherwise, our flight went smoothly. (Thank the Lord!) Five of our family members deplaned, got our luggage and headed to the Avis rental center, where two cars were supposed to be ready for us. We had to boogie because it was 12:30 pm and we had a 2-2.5 hour drive from Chicago to Bloomington. The visitation was scheduled for 4 pm. This should work out fine.

Ha! Only one of two cars was available so we patiently waited for AN HOUR before the second car showed up. No, I'm not exaggerating. As soon as we packed three of us into this 2nd car, a 3rd car showed up for us. I couldn't believe it. It was 1:30 pm so we had to haul it to make the 4 pm visitation. Luckily, the roads were clear. Trent & his sister "Susu" sat upfront, while I napped for 2 hours in the back seat. Way to be supportive, Megan!

When we finally arrived in Bloomington, we checked into our hotel rooms and changed clothes. It was just after 4 pm but what could we do? We booked it over to the funeral home for the rest of the vistation.

I think I must have an odd view of things. No surprise there, I suppose. Visitations/wakes are peculiar customs to me. My husband pointed out that many of the visitors had not seen each other in a long time. They were reconnecting and laughing -- a nice thing, of course. The oddity to me (at all visitations/wakes, NOT just this one) is that while everyone reconnects, it's almost as if the honoree is ignored. It's as if it's so painful to acknowledge the passing of this special person that we look everywhere else. I only wish I could make my family members feel better but this mourning process is a difficult one for most people.

After Grandpa's visitation, we headed to Friar Tuck's, a liquor store, and traveled to a rural part of Bloomington for a family dinner. This was an enjoyable time and, as Susu pointed out, a great opportunity to get to know cousins, aunts and others again. While we wish it wasn't under these circumstances, we had a good time laughing and telling stories on each other.

Everyone turned in for the night but after our return to the hotel, Susu, Trent & I had a night cap. This morning, the hotel parking lot was covered in snow. It's really pretty but we all know that today will be a difficult one. With Grandpa serving in WW II, a military burial is expected. The cold air will chill us further. I try to remind myself that Grandpa is in a better place. It's so tough to see the grief on others' faces and not be able to console them. I pray that some good things, good reconnections are remembered from this trip.

Difficult Discussion of a Funeral

We had a wonderful Christmas holiday with both my parents & sister as well as my husband Trent's parents & sister. Little K was a delight, opening gifts while wearing a green dress my own mother made me years ago. It's interesting how time develops.

The tough news we received on Christmas Day was that Trent's grandfather passed away just outside Chicago. We'll soon travel to pay our respects and help out however we can. Unfortunately, Little K never met Grandpa so it's difficult to explain to her. I must admit that it's not the first time the thought of this has crossed my mind. My 84-year-old PaPa recently emailed me to say:

"After all, your dad's mom is 94 and your mom's parents are both 84. And, although they are all in good health considering their ages, they are all still past their prime.

How do you explain to a child, say one Little K's age (2.5 years), that a grandparent has died? Do you take them to the viewing and/or funeral ? If so why? And if not, why not?"

So many of us will sooner or later face this challenging discussion. How would you handle it? I simply told Little K this morning that Mommy & Daddy would be taking a trip on an airplane. When she asked if she was going, I told her, no, that instead she gets to visit Grand & PaPa, plus go to the family ranch. Oddly, that answer seemed to suffice her ... for now. Whether she asks more questions over the next few days or the next few years, I'd like to be prepared and give her the information that will best help her.

Strange Smudges Decorate My House

Today is the last day of nursery school before the Christmas break. As Little K ate her breakfast before school, I scurried around the house, picking up, starting the laundry, the usual drill. Oddly, I kept finding pink smudges around our home. It looked like a little person had gotten into some pink nail polish and spread it throughout the house. I found the marks on the guest bathroom sink handle, the pantry door, the kitchen counter... but not on Little K's nails. Hmmm. With a quick wipe, the marks disappeared.

Ah ha! It was that candy cande that Little K had last night. That's a new spin on "the mark of Zorro!"

3 Safety Tips for Healthy Eating

1) Eat Organic Popcorn: Because new insecticidal proteins have recently been added to corn, consider switching to organic corn products to avoid eating insecticide with that next batch of popcorn!

By law, conventional corn and corn products like popcorn and high fructose corn syrup are actually allowed to have insecticidal proteins engineered into them (while, by law, organic corn can not contain these insecticidal proteins).

These new proteins were recently introduced to ensure corn’s profitability for ethanol crops, though no human trials were ever conducted to test their safety. Given that the Europeans don’t even allow their cattle and livestock to eat this new corn, we probably shouldn’t be feeding it to our little ones!

2) Drink "Clean" Milk: If you don’t have a milk allergy (symptoms include eczema, chronic ear infections, bronchial-like coughs, acne), then look for milk labeled "rBGH-free" which does not contain the recent addition of chemically engineered milk proteins and hormones.

Most milk in the US contains a synthetic milk protein genetically created from the growth hormone of a cow. This protein, rBGH, is injected into American cows, but not allowed in milk in Europe, Australia and around the world because of its health risks.

To avoid rBGH, look for milk cartons that say "rBGH-free" in order to avoid exposing your family to these hidden chemical milk proteins.

3) Drink Filtered Water: Drinking filtered water helps to eliminate and reduce your family’s exposure to bug sprays, hidden allergens, chemicals and pesticides that have recently found their way into our water supply.

Reducing your exposure to chemicals and toxins is a great way to help strengthen your family’s digestive tract where autoimmune conditions like food allergies can originate.

Holiday Cooking & Breakfast with Elmo

Cooking during the holidays is a big part of many families' agenda. Don't let this stress you out. Encourage the kids to help you. We get together with my parents, sister and cousin for the "Annual Bake Off," when we bake our favorite holiday treats and wrap them up to give to friends and co-workers. Little K loved frosting the cookies with her relatives. She also proved to be a great taster -- the ever important job. Don't let cooking stress you out. It can be a great bonding opportunity. You'll have to clean up regardless, so enjoy your time together.

Not to Be Preachy But... The Real Meaning of Christmas

In preparing for today’s devotional at my MOPS, I searched through a book & the MOPS web site to find the perfect thing to say. The search actually pointed out what was going on right before me.

I’ve hurried to send out Christmas cards, bake goodies for today but also for my clients. I still need to get goodies for my neighbors. I’ve bought & wrapped all our gifts. I’ve even planned out how much time we’ll spend with my in-laws versus my parents. With all this preparation complete, why am I still stressed?

Then, my thoughts turn to my 2.5 year old daughter. When asked what she wants for Christmas, she doesn’t really know what to say. After prompting, she finally decides the “Mickey Mouse dog that barks.” (That’s code for Pluto.) But Kylie will tell you nothing else. She simply doesn’t want anything else.

However, I’ve found it inspiring to see her head downstairs each morning and look into our nativity scene. She looks with wonder into the empty manger & announces “No Baby Jesus yet.” While somewhat humorous, shouldn’t we all be so eager to experience the birth of Christ?

This Christmas season, I hope each of you will be able to look beyond the presents, bows and appointments. I hope you’ll eagerly await the true meaning of Christmas and find comfort and peace in that anticipation. As for me, I’m still working on it.

Words to Christmas Songs

If you're like any of my family members, you'll understand the need for a Web site with the words to traditional Christmas songs. Although we sing these songs every year, we always forget a word or phrase. Other times, we make up words to the songs and don't realize we're doing it.

That's why I like the Web site http://www.41051.com/xmaslyrics/, which has numerous traditional Christmas songs and the words. I couldn't copy and paste them directly from these Web pages so I right clicked on the page, selected View Source and then did a copy and paste of the lyrics. Finally, I deleted the
which came over from the html coding. Now I have all the words to those songs.

If only the site could improve my singing voice.

Tips for Santa Visit & Helping Local Kids

For those of you thinking of getting photos taken with Santa this year, the Santa at Memorial City Mall had some good advice. First, he said not to carry the children up to him, but rather let them walk or push them up in the stroller. They sometimes fight the Santa experience because they are being transferred from a parent's arms. Santa also said he’s been told that a lot of moms show their kids a Santa movie a couple of times leading up to the visit so that the kids actually recognize him and he seems more familiar. He suggested the Tim Allen "Santa Claus" movie. On the other hand, "Bad Santa" with Billy Bob might not be a good idea.

St. Nicholas Stopped By

Me and my bright ideas... Yes, St. Nicholas visited Little K last night. She was thrilled to find her little shoes filled with money, a lollipop and candy. I explained this morning that she could choose one candy to have after she got dressed for school. (Pat on the back, Mommy. That's smart.) After careful thought, my daughter chose the largest candy. (Yes, she is also smart.)

Little K quickly got dressed and then we opened her first candy from St. Nicholas. (The last few years, we forgot.) It was a gorgeous citrus candy that barely fit into her palm. I had saved it for a special occasion when I received it a few weeks ago at some event. I thought Little K would like it. (If it's not chocolate, I'm not interested. Sorry.)

Little K's eyes grew big as she delicately licked the citrus candy. Then, she made the oddest face. She licked it again. Hmmm. Maybe she wasn't expecting a citrus taste, I thought.

"Ewww, yuck, Mommy," she said. "I don't like it."

I smelled the candy with the anticipation of orange fragrances. It does in fact smell weird. In fact, it smells like soap! What? How in the world did I mistake soap for candy? Whatever! On St. Nicholas Day, you're not supposed to get your mouth washed out with soap by your sneaky (well maybe dingy) mother.

Little K picked out another candy & didn't think anything else about it... luckily. Next year, I hope St. Nicholas brings traditional candy.

Dec. 6 = St. Nicholas Day

My mom just called with a fun reminder. December 6 is St. Nicholas Day! So, parents, encourage your kids to put one pair of their shoes beside their bed tonight and wait for St. Nicholas. You may have to help him, but St. Nicholas comes in the middle of the night and fills good children's shoes with goodies. As a kid, I used to get everything from money to candy or markers... anything that can fit into kids' shoes.

Now that my shoes are bigger, I wish St. Nicholas would fill my shoes. That's the trouble with growing up. :-)

Birthday and Ailing Christmas Tree

Happy Birthday to me! Little K may be more excited about it than me. Trust me, that's hard to believe. I love birthdays. I made it another year -- Yeah! And there's so much more to accomplish. For me, it's like a more positive, slightly more sober New Year's Day. Cheers!

Since I decided several years ago NOT to work on my birthday, I'll be running errands. Ugh! This morning, I went to a ribbon cutting for the local Chamber of Commerce and lined up an initial meeting with a prospective client. (Yes, that does actually count as work.) Just had lunch with a girlfriend, now I'm heading to a local boutique shop to drop off 12 copies of my book 100+ Activities for Houston Kids. Yeah! I have a few more errands to run for Christmas gifts, then I'll pick up Little K for some Mommy & Kylie time.

Tonight, we're staying home for fajitas. After the holiday weekend, I'd just rather stay home. We're also planning to go buy another artificial Christmas tree since my husband Trent plugged in our old tree that is pre-strung with lights, only to discover that half the lights don't even work. He was so frustrated that he immediately picked up the tree, took it outside and landed it in the trash can. My sister Colyn & I roared! We'll set up the NEW tree tonight and BOY, am I ready for the holidays. I love Christmas! Yes, we certainly have plenty to be thankful for! If only we could all capture the excitement seen through my daughter. I'll try.

Ordinary Moments Are Special

I take a lot of photos of our family. I love my digital camera & I love my collection of sunshine & smiles, petting zoos & adventures, new ideas & learned facial expressions. The challenge when I look through hundreds of photos is that I’m rarely pictured there with Little K and often her Daddy. I’m the one behind the scenes or in this case behind the camera. It’s important for someone to play that role but every once in a while you want to see yourself front & center. Notice that I say “you want to see yourself front & center.” I don’t think it really matters what others see.

I did share these thoughts with my husband on a recent trip to Galveston & he understood. Every now & then my hubby would grab the camera & take a few shots. There were some cute ones, no doubt, & I appreciated his effort.

Then, there was the snapshot. My favorite snapshot. Little K & I cuddled on the sofa, pretended that we were sleeping until we both giggled like the silly girls we are. No make up, just PJs. Our hair dos are a mess. And we’re wrapped up in the moment of holding each other & laughing together. The rest of the world could go on by itself. We were only focused on that moment.

Isn’t that how life with your children should be? So even when you’re usually the person behind the scenes, take in that moment & know that you are so important to your child. You make them feel whole & they do the same for you. Every moment counts – whether you’re experiencing an over-orchestrated play date or snuggle time on the sofa. That ordinary moment may actually be the exact moment you need to see. For me, just cuddling with my daughter feels like one of the greatest reasons I became a parent, no, a mommy.

Turning A Tough Day Around

This morning, I got dressed quickly before Little K awoke, hoping I'd have "it all pulled together" before she awoke. Hmmm, I'm missing a rather important button on that blouse and don't think my client would appreciate the "Gweneth Paltrow" look as my husband called it. I tried removing a button from the very bottom of the shirt since that part would be tucked in. No luck finding the seam ripper. I resorted to scissors, a shisk-ka-bab skewer and finally a knife which sawed the threads of. I almost cut off my pinkie.

I quickly put some Egg Beaters on the stove and then sewed my button. What's that smell? Oh, my eggs burning. Then, my eggs burning on the stove top and running down the oven door.

So it's going to be one of those days, is it? I asked aloud.

I eat my burned eggs as my husband wipes up the stove... well, he sort of did. As I'm pouring Little K's milk, I hear her calling for me. I head upstairs to get her dressed for nursery school even though her nose is running and her voice is hoarse. Allergies?

As we're getting dressed, I realize my new button is actually much smaller than the ones above and below it. I really don't even care today. It's Monday.

As I rush through my day of client appointments and ignorant recent college grads that are sure they know more than Einstein (don't even ask them about me!), I remember one verse I recently saw:

"Every day offers a chance to choose either anger or understanding, bitterness or acceptance, darkness or light. And the choices we make reveal the stuff we're made of."

I like that. I'm heading to pick up Little K & then we'll go "eat some shrimpers" at my parents' house while my grandparents are still in town. After all, I don't think I need to attempt cooking again today.

Veterans Day Parade in Houston

I really think Veterans Day is an important holiday. My (maternal side) Grammy and PaPa Don both served as Marines in World War II. The stories they tell and the photos they share are moving. Whether or not one of your relatives is a veteran, there is a lot to learn and respect from these individuals. I hope you will show your children how to respect those currently serving in the military and those with previous service. How? Head to the Veterans Day Parade this weekend.

Lap Sit Story Time in November

Babies – ages 3 months to 24 months – and their caregivers will enjoy the November Lap Sit Story Time session at the West University Library. Each Wednesday – starting November 7 through November 28 – at 10:30 AM, we will sing songs, chant nursery rhymes, bounce and clap for about 20 minutes. Afterward, there will be playtime with the soft toys. That’s a good time to meet new people, visit and possibly set up play dates.

Halloween with Great Grandmother

Today, we celebrated Halloween early with my Grandmother at the nursing home. I was pleasantly surprised at how the staff worked hard to bring very young children together with their grandparents and great grandparents. Little K loved the dancing and the treats (while we weeded out the candies with peanuts!). We enjoyed a cloudless day in the mid 70s and got some warm sunshine on our faces. Ahhhh.

My Grandmother carefully watched a couple of older men chatting and standing in the middle of the party. Then Grandmother leaned over to us and said, "Looks like they're running for office the way they're standing there." Ha! At 93, she still cracks me up!

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking , I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to trust in God.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

Pumpkin Pickin'

Today, we went to DiOrio Farm -- a fruit & vegetable market -- in Navasota, TX. to pick out our pumpkins. Cousin Brent came along to help us find just the right one. He also helped in tickling. Say "Cheese!"

Skin the Rabbit

As a kid, whenever my mom helped me take off my shirt to get re-dressed, she'd say "Skin the Rabbit" and pull off my shirt. A few months ago, my Uncle Sean asked if I do that with Little K since Uncle Sean does that with his own daughter. Then, we talked about how groce the meaning of those words are.

To make matters worse (or more comical), Little K now enjoys picking which animal will be "skinned" that day. This morning, it was indeed a rabbit. Last night, it was the monkey, Curious George. Ewwww.

Cookie Starts with C

Since my husband had to work most of Saturday (boo!) & then conquering chores in the backyard, Little K and I found ourselves quite busy indoors. We both donned our aprons and made chocolate chip & pecan cookies for some friends. I have quite the helper. Not only can she cook but Little K makes an excellent TASTER!

It was a fun mommy & child activity. If only we had not shipped all those cookies off to our friends!
